Jenny Lawson Times Two!

Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson

Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson

July 3, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson “In short? It is exhausting being me. Pretending to be normal is draining and requires amazing amounts of energy and Xanax.” Jenny Lawson, the Bloggess, is one of the most relateable and funny women to come out of the blog craze of the early aughts. Her debut novel, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, is a hysterical and poignant look at living with mental illness. But Jenny’s life isn’t just about managing her anxiety, OCD and […]

Squirrel Girl continues to delight with choose your own adventure, dating drama, and computer science! (bonus review from Ysakitty)

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist), Jacob Chabot (artist)

July 3, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Squirrel Girl a.k.a. Doreen Green is at the top of my favorite superhero list and I love sharing her with people unfamiliar with this awesome heroine.  My daughters look up to her and you couldn’t ask for a better role model.  In this fourth graphic novel collection there are two particular issues that stand out for their uniqueness in my (albeit limited) comic reading.  The book starts with a choose your own adventure and ends with an issue devoted entirely to using computer science.  In […]

Max is back and knows Soccer

Max Explains Everything: Soccer Expert. by Stacy McAnulty

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Max Explains Everything: Grocery Store Expert started Max’s teaching journey and now he is back for round two with Max Explains Everything: Soccer Expert. Stacy McAnulty’s Max is exactly like before. Therefore, if you like the attitude and antics that Max did, then continue the journey with this book. If you did not like Grocery Store Expert, then please stop here. I was not a fan of Max while in the grocery store and not a fan of his while he plays soccer. Of course, […]

When a Disaster turns out to be the best day of your life

Harold Snipperpot's Best Disaster Ever  by Beatrice Alemagna

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I will say, I was not a big fan of Beatrice Alemagna’s, On a Magical Do-Nothing Day. Yet, it was a huge hit with most of my coworkers in both our stores. Therefore, I am assuming Harold Snipperpot’s Best Disaster Ever will be for anyone a fan of this author and illustrator. While the story could be a hit or miss for the reader (and a miss for me) this book has an interesting point. While the theme was strong, the execution of the wild rumpus […]

Whole New Meaning to Chicken Scratch

Chicken Talk by Patricia MacLauchlan

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Chicken Talk has such an interesting premise, it has very little middle ground for the “do I like it or not” category. It is one of those books you will love or hate. Therefore, if you like funny stories, or stories about families or about farms and especially about chickens you will probably like this. And if you are a fan of Patricia MacLauchlan as an author you will love this as it is her signature style all over the pages. Now, do you like […]

“When you write and draw in pencil, your eraser is your best friend.” ― Anthony T.Hincks

When Pencil Met Eraser by Karen Kilpatrick

July 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #Illustrated I was not sure about When Pencil Met Eraser as it looked like another odd couple story. And, it pretty much is that. The characters of Pencil and Eraser created by Karen Kilpatrick and Luis O. Ramos, Jr are complete opposites, and that means what you think it means. There is a little tension between these two at first. Pencil likes to draw lines, shapes and keep creating. Eraser likes to make some empty space that it feels enhances the image (such as […]
