One sled and some bad jokes make for two new early readers

Penny and Her Sled by Kevin Henkes

Little Penguin’s New Friend by Tadgh Bentley

October 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do not read all of Kevin Henkes picture books and especially do not read his easier readers. (Or honesty, easy readers in general unless something really speaks to me). Yet, I was looking for something different and that different was when I found Penny and Her Sled by him. It was not either a picture book or an easy reader. But somehow both. This caught my attention. It is a sweet, cute and a fun not your usual snow book. Everything you know and […]

Like a tea-tray in the sky

Bernard Pepperlin by Cara Hoffman

October 4, 2019 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Overall, Bernard Pepperlin is a sweet story. We have a hero mouse, with a familiar past, showing what the little guy can do. The story of Bernard (aka The Dormouse of one famous tea party), is one of courage, community, friendship and even, mistakes. The introduction by Cara Hoffman tells how Bernard came to life by telling about special friends, young sons and lots of hard work. Her text is smooth and well done. The illustrations are sparse, but what Olga Demidova has done is […]

Especially when it’s your turn to roll the 20-sided die.

Sunny Rolls the Dice by Jennifer L. Holm

October 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It does not matter when you go to middle school: in the late 1970s like Sunny does in Sunny Rolls the Dice by sister and brother team Jennifer L. Holm (author) and Matthew Holm (illustrator); or in the late 1980s (like I did) or now: it stinks. I mean ostrich egg sized stink. Trying to get groovy points can be hard when you rather play Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) then get Gloria Vanderbilt jeans. Sunny is just trying to learn the rules to survive middle […]

A saucer of milk…. and keep ’em coming!

Kitten Construction Company: Meet the House Kitten by John Patrick Green

October 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Awww kittens are soooo cute! They just snuggle up on the pages and just are…cute! They are fluffy and adorable and sweet and look so cute in their hardhats. Must post to social media. Never mind that these kittens in Kitten Construction Company: Meet the House Kittens by John Patrick Green are architects, plumbers, electricians and more. These kittens know how to build! They know how to light things up! They know how to plumb the plumbing! Never mind how cute they are… just take them […]

One Zombie Goldfish vs. One Vampire Cat: Round One

The Fintastic Fishsitter (My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish) by Mo O’Hara

October 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As previously stated, I am not always a remake fan. And while The Fintastic Fishsitter (My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish) is not a remake per say, it is a retelling of the story. First it is the timeless Tweety vs. Sylvester. Cat vs Dog. It is the “good vs evil” story. Only told as a Vampire Cat and Zombie Goldfish. Different, but done before. Also, Mo O’Hara’s Zombie Goldfish is in a picture book format this time (part of the remake). Not having read O’Hara’s […]

“Real” Princesses can be too sensitive!

The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas by Tony Wilson

October 3, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

To be perfect honest I am not always a fan of remakes. Yet, when a remake is good, I am the first in line to promote it. In the good remake corner, we have The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas. No need to tell you (but will) that this is a spoof on the Princess and the Pea story. Prince Henrik is Tony Wilson’s prince (obviously) and he is not your everyday, going to a party prince. He likes camping, hockey and other […]
