The Lost Cousins by B.B Cronin

November 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I found the hide-and-seek aspect a bit difficult in The Lost Cousins by B.B Cronin, therefore, this is more for the older child (5 to 8 or even older). However, it is suggested for slightly younger aged group. It will depend on the actual child and if there is adult help as well. Just announced as part of the NYT’s Best Illustrated Books of the Year 2019, it is described: “All great picture books make you see the world in a new way, but B.B. […]

A little snoring gets awfully annoyin’

Stop Snoring, Bernard! by Zachariah OHora

November 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I can empathize with Bernard’s friends in Stop Snoring, Bernard! In typical Zachariah OHora style, their little otter just wants to sleep, his friends want to sleep, but Bernard and his snoring keeps everyone up. Will he ever find a place he will not bother others? This is a cute but somewhat predictable story. I do think a different ending would have been interesting, however. As there is an interesting solution that could have been taken farther, even if not exactly the most realistic ending. […]

Sofia Valdez Stands Up

Sofia Valdez, Future Prez (The Questioneers) by Andrea Beaty

November 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Continuation of the Questioneers books we now have Sofia Valdez, Future Prez. This is everything the others were. There are no surprises and that is perfectly okay. You do not need anything special other than seeing what one kid can do when she puts her mind to it. However, this time (for me) we have gone too many times for this theme. That is not to say I did not enjoy it, I just have pretty much figured out the stories and while I will […]

Bear Is Awake! An Alphabet Story by Hannah E. Harrison

November 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not usually a simple Alphabet book person (A is apple; B is bear; C is car) but Bear Is Awake! An Alphabet Story by Hannah E. Harrison is not your typical “D is for dinosaur” alphabet book. It might only have a handful of words to show you each of the letters, but it is packed full of adventure due to the ones used and the illustrations that accompany the text. The subject matter focuses on slightly unusual words or ideas, such as […]

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunks by David Sedaris

November 4, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Holidays on Ice I feel like I could write a whole essay on things I’ve been told how much I would like and then the actual experience of reading or experiencing those things and how it’s not always let down, but something. I think that’s true about most of my experience with David Sedaris. I like a lot of his stuff, but haven’t read a single thing. What I mean by this is that I don’t think I could imagine sitting down and reading anything […]

7 Vests and One Cool Bird

Little Robin’s Christmas. by Jan Fearnley (

October 31, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I enjoyed the illustrations immensely in Little Robin’s Christmas. This story by Jan Fearnley is sweet. But it did not hit the right note with me. The point of the story is obvious (be kind to others) and the ending was a bit forced for my liking. The cameo by another person we associate with the color of red and a winter holiday was a little disappointing. Little Robin has seven vest and each day he puts a new one on. But as he goes […]
