Get your red hot and garlic and BBQ and oh so much more crickets here

Chirp by Kate Messner

November 18, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Chirp is an age appropriate (10-14) book dealing with some heavy subjects.  But overall, they are presented respectfully and are accessible to all readers. There were a few bumps in the plot for me, but I felt it was a decent story and for certain the style that you have come to expect from the author. Kate Messner writes about Mia, a young girl moving back to Vermont after several years living in Boston. Her parents and she have come back to help her grandmother […]

Investigators by John Patrick Green

November 15, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Investigators is the first book in a new series by John Patrick Green; who as an author and as an illustrator is busy! He has (so far) The Kitten Construction Company series (currently two books), Hippopotamister (a solo tale) and now the Investigators (book two is planned for a year from now). There are a lot of puns, obvious jokes and toilet humor (literally as they travel the city by flushing themselves through toilets). There are multiple mysteries for this Get Smart meets The Man […]

Um….why don’t you just go to the store and get more syrup?

Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast by Josh Funk

November 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Leftovers can be one of the best meals. It has seasoned. It usually has the bonus of being something you made too much of as you like it, not because it is left over because you did not like what you made. However, Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast was as stale as if real French toast or pancakes were leftovers. Josh Funk’s book was in our sale books recently. I usually enjoy them as you get to find an older title that you either […]

Three Cheers for Kid McGear!: (Family Read Aloud Books, Construction Books for Kids, Children’s New Experiences Books, Stories in Verse) by Sherri Duskey Rinker is another book in the Goodnight, Construction Site series. It is another book telling you, “Just because you are small, you can do some big things.” There are no surprises. It is straight forward and sweet. Like vehicles? You will enjoy meeting the new friend. What you love about AG Ford’s illustrations are here. What you love about Sherri Duskey Rinker’s stories is […]

This book is not boring

The Boring Book by Shinsuke Yoshitake

November 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This book is not boring. It, is, however, confusing. But not boring. I am not sure kids will get all of what is going on in The Boring Book: (Children’s Book about Boredom, Funny Kids Picture Book, Early Elementary School Story Book), but they will enjoy making their own story to the illustrations and the illustrations themselves. Shinsuke Yoshitake’s book is another on the 2019 New York Times/New York Public Library Best Illustrated Children’s Books list. And, while they are interesting illustrations (brightly colored, busy […]

Clarence Goes Out West & Meets a Purple Horse by Jean Ekman Adam

November 14, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Clarence Goes Out West & Meets a Purple Horse by Jean Ekman Adams could  have written (and therefore read) in the 1980s or early 1990s.  That quirky “otherness” I associate with stories of my youth. They did not have a message per say but they had the only point being about friendship. There might have been a message, but it was too hidden to see. For me, Clarence and said purple horse has no “over-the-top” message; it is happy to be a book for fun. However, […]
