Squad Ghouls

Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel

January 27, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This book has an odd backstory. I was looking at the library website and noticed several graphic novels I would like to read. I went to the library to pick up the sequel to the book I was reading and pull other books to look at. Maybe take one more home as I still had three that I had taken out the other day and was checking out the sequel. I picked up Ghostopolis by Doug TenNapel. The cover was what had caught my attention, […]

Break it down, get it done.

Get Your Sh*t Together by Sarah Knight

January 25, 2020 by kniki 2 Comments

Get Your Sh*t Together is a basic, yet fun and profanity filled method for sorting out anything you need to in your life, from little day-to-day things to big life changing stuff. This is the second ‘not’ self-help book from anti-guru Sarah Knight, whose first book The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k not only gave the world a fun reprieve from having discussions with spatulas about whether they deserved to stay in their kitchen drawer – it also taught swearword-tolerant folks how to […]

Have you heard of this author, Margaret Atwood?

Angel Catbird Volume 1 by Margaret Atwood

January 24, 2020 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

What do you do with a book like Angel Catbird Volume 1? You read it. However, the real question is should you have read it? In other words, a book is meant to be read, but did it have to be this book? I had heard of Margaret Atwood (she wrote a little book called The Handmaid’s Tale) but had not realized that she had partaken of the world of illustrations and graphic novels. I admit I only realized she was the author after I […]

Parts of Gulp are hard to swallow

Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal by Mary Roach

January 22, 2020 by pixifer Leave a Comment

I love Mary Roach’s books. They’re funny and irreverent and very educational. Her use of ridiculous footnotes rivals that of Gaiman’s and Pratchett’s Good Omens. So I had really high hopes for Gulp when I first picked it up a few years ago.  Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal is about the human digestive tract, from the mouth all the way down to the exit. It discusses how smell affects taste, the roles of saliva, why poop smells and attempts to make it not smell, […]

“Theorizing that one could time travel …”

The Time Museum V01 by Matthew Loux

January 22, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Time Museum has been on the TBR list for a while now. I finally got around to picking it up after it fell on the floor (after all, it was in my hand). I went at this book without a lot of pre-knowledge other than Matthew Loux had a book that had a girl in it, there was going to be some science fiction by the looks of things and was probably funny as the cover image did not look a 100% serious. I […]

Memories and those that make them with us

In a Jar by Deborah Marcero

January 21, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Today was a busy day for new releases of the children variety. Released on this day of review writing, In a Jar will be a book that will be getting a lot of attention. Deborah Marcero made a book about friendship that has a slightly different presentation. Llewellyn is a rabbit who collects things in jars. Somethings are obvious, but others might surprise you. One day he meets another little rabbit, Evelyn, and the two start a friendship that includes collecting rainbows, wind and more. […]
