Same, Nora

I remember nothing by Nora Ephron

March 9, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Nora Ephron’s later works seem to exist so that I have something to read while killing time reselling my old books to the used bookstore. They take about 45 minutes to read, are pleasant but not taxing, and amusing without a ton of investment. They’re ephemeral as a result, and I am only 80% certain that I remember the essays correctly. Like, I just read something about how useless egg white omelets are and that the correct way to make one is to add yolks […]

I should have probably read this at Christmas

Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas by Adam Kay

March 9, 2020 by TheShitWizard Leave a Comment

The obligatory Christmas tie-in to Kay’s This Is Going To Hurt, Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas covers the many Christmases that Kay worked for the NHS, with all the humour and heartache that one would expect. It’s an extremely quick read too – you could finish it in the time it took you to eat a Christmas dinner – which would fit perfectly into a stocking (remember this for, erm, nine months time I guess). Being an obstetrics/maternity specialist, babies who refuse to wait till […]

“This is how all Noirs end, with a hug.”

Cut and Run by Ben Acker, Ben Blacker

March 6, 2020 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

Cut and Run was one of my free Audible Originals last month. It is an absurd little story about a rag-tag team of organ harvesting good guys down in Mexico. Honestly, its best not to care too much about the plot, because, as I said, it is absurd. But this thing has a murderer’s row of a cast! It was a delight to listen to from start to finish. The performers really raised the quality of the material. We have D’Arcy Carden as Sam, the […]

She ain’t no Buffy

Poesy the Monster Slayer by Cory Doctorow

March 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Poesy the Monster Slayer was not my cup of tea. Poesy seems to be a bratty child. I understand her need to “fight the monsters” due to her fears (though she says she is not afraid, but her father who is actually afraid) but why did she have to be nasty about it? A quiet “fight” would be fine and a great lesson to children. Maybe say Monsters hate whispering so she whispers to them. Or point to a nightlight because they dislike light (her […]

A teaser for mid-April

The Magical Yet by Angela DiTerlizzi

March 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I am 55/45 with the story of The Magical Yet, the illustrations are at a 99.9999999% awesome (why not 100? Well, nothing is perfect.) The modern idea and surreal, color blasting realistic illustrations makes this a new book for all ages. Kids will appreciate the flow of the story and the adults can appreciate the overall theme and the art. Angela DiTerlizzi’s story of a young child having trouble riding their bike, wanting to give up and trying again is an established theme. However, […]

Mob Psycho 100 Volume 1 by One

March 2, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was speaking with a coworker about a Netflix show he had seen a few episodes of. It was Mob Psycho 100. I found book one and thought “Why not? I only have a couple thousand other books, what is one more to read?” Beside it was something I had never heard of and it sounded interesting. Plus, I have wanted to read more manga. I can boil down this review to three words: One unique story. Yet, another way to describe this book is […]
