“Morituri Nolumus Mori … Er, roughly speaking, it means, ‘We who are about to die don’t want to.’”

The Last Hero (Discworld, #27) by Terry Pratchett

April 14, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

It’s been a while since I’ve visited the Discworld. I usually try to read two or three a year, but I only managed to read one in 2019. Plus I had to track down a copy of this since my library didn’t have it, and then I never got around to reading it over the summer like I was supposed to. As always, should have read it sooner. This book tickled me. This is actually considered the 27th full book of the series, despite it […]

Get a Life, Chloe Brown (The Brown Sisters, #1) by Talia Hibbert

April 9, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

This was just such a good, happy reading experience, and the audio made it better. I am once again about a month behind my reviews, because it took me so long to write my review for Docile, so this one will be short and sweet. I basically adored this book. I’ve never read Talia Hibbert before, but you can bet I’ll be checking out her entire backlist now. This book was swoony and romantic, smart and compassionate, and funny! It’s so rare to find a […]

Peanut Goes for the Gold by Jonathan Van Ness

April 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Just be yourself. Everyone else is taken.” Is probably the motto Peanut lives by. A non-gendered hamster does their thing in this quirky picture book called Peanut Goes for the Gold. Jonathan Van Ness, of Queer Eye fame, decided that this lovable fuzzy guy needed to tell the story of how to be determined, to do what ya gotta do and to remember to always tie your shoes before doing your rhythmic gymnastics routine. The story is basic: Be yourself. But there are enough new […]

An adventure in name, but almost not in reality

The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship by Philip Pullman

April 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Adventures of John Blake: Mystery of the Ghost Ship by Philip Pullman had a lot of potential. But it never really got off the ground. Sure, it had a James Bond meets every Ghost Ship story you know. And sure, the graphic novel illustrations were nice. Fred Fordham did To Kill A Mockingbird that I enjoyed. And I would like to see his adaptation of The Great Gatsby this summer. But something about the overall package never “did it” for me. The story has elements of […]

Three Ways to Trap a Leprechaun by  Tara Lazar

April 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

For several years, I have seen or read about books that have children wanting to trap Santa Claus. This time our heroine wants to trap a leprechaun. With the help of her reluctant (and sleepy) brother, we see the science behind creating a trap in Three Ways to Trap a Leprechaun. This is not a St. Patrick’s Day book, or even one that only people of Irish decent would appreciate (though I for one appreciated the blarney and cheek of the leprechaun in question). This […]

Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets & Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong

April 8, 2020 by Halbs 2 Comments

Like most Ali Wong fans, I first discovered the comic via her Netflix stand-up specials. They’re very funny, obviously, but also really relatable and comforting. If you have kids, she makes you feel like it’s ok to have the messy mix of emotions, dirty clothes, an unexpected swearing at strangers that comes with the joyful burden of parenting. It’s quite the mix – being so dirty (her word) and warm at once. The book is more of the same. Dear Girls is framed as Wong […]
