The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles by Orpheus Collar

May 28, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Rick Riordan is a popular author. I have not had the pleasure of reading his novels, but I have meet him once and have read two of his books adapted for the graphic novel format. The Red Pyramid book one of The Kane Chronicles was adapted by Orpheus Collar. And while it is a good story (we are following Egyptian mythology this time), it is also a slow story in places. It took me several days to finish it, as I was only able to […]

“Reality is frequently inaccurate.”

Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

May 26, 2020 by Nart Leave a Comment

I continue my foray back into the world of the Hitchhiker’s Guide with the second in the series. It’s good! But really isn’t as good as the first, which is not at all what I remember from when I read this in high school. The plot line with the impossible engine is straight up still one of the most original, creative things I’ve ever read. The concert they nearly died at was absolutely spectacular. The way they sacrificed Marvin without a second thought made me […]

See, what we have here is a failure to communicate

If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look On My Face? by Alan Alda

May 26, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I love that Alan Alda has settled nicely into his role as America’s Grandpa. This book is filled with that down-to-earth wisdom, here on the subject of communication itself. The book is surprisingly fact and science dense (or perhaps not, for those who are familiar with his “Flame Challenge,” the contest he started to explain basic science in a way that 11 year olds could understand, judged by those same 11 year olds) but conversational and accessible. Which, again, might be expected of a book […]

“I can remember how grown-up I felt then, and earlier, since about nine. Because we age one way, in one direction, every age we are is the most grown-up we’ve ever been.”

Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body by Sara Pascoe

May 20, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

Sara Pascoe is here for you. There is no stone she won’t turn over and no story she won’t tell, because she is going to use her embarrassments, misunderstandings, failures, and larks to help you learn. If you are looking for a medical textbook on what it means to be a human woman then go ahead and look elsewhere. If you want a smart and unflinching comedian to share her life story with you while looking back through biology, history, and cultural norms in order […]

With his red hoodie and his bicycle basket full of food

Federico and the Wolf by Rebecca J. Gomez

May 20, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My job has many layers, but unlike an onion, only some stink. One layer that does not stink is finding new books. Today a customer needed a book for a student of theirs. Federico and the Wolf. I pictured some stuffy looking cover. An old Mexican folk tale. Rich with history but dry. Boy was I surprised! Rebecca J. Gomez and Elisa Chavarri created a clever take on the Little Red Riding Hood story told with a Mexican American twist.  Rhyming and just bouncy text […]

You Look Like a Thing and I Love You by Janelle Shane

May 19, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

There have been so many “I gave a bot hours of Hallmark movies / Olive Garden commercials / what have you and it generated this content” posts obviously written by people out there that I forgot how much I love actual AI gone amok. Inspiration Bot makes me cackle on the regular. My favorite NewsRadio episode involved Jimmy James’ book “Jimmy James: Corporate Lion Tamer” being translated into Japanese and then back into English, resulting in “Macho Business Donkey Wrestler.” Don’t even get me started […]
