Jack (Prelutsky) is back!

Hard-Boiled Bugs for Breakfast: And Other Tasty Poems by Jack Prelutsky

October 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you like eggs? Bugs? Funny and punny kids poems? Then Hard-Boiled Bugs for Breakfast: And Other Tasty Poems by Jack Prelutsky is for you.  Now, not all are about food, but several are. There is something for all tastes, but they do lean towards the silly, goofy and sometimes down right well…. less than a Rhodes Scholar. But for the most part, everything is funny and has a message behind them. The rhyming text makes it easy to read. Good for a classroom, by […]

A Dandelion by any other name probably wouldn’t be a dandelion, but these ARE great poems

Dandelion by Gabbie Hanna

October 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I did not enjoy Dandelion as much as the first poetry collection by Gabbie Hanna. However, the poems are still as raw and a deep look into one person’s journey. The only reason I am not as “into” this one is that they are more of the same. Adultolescence had themes seen before but done in a humorous and serious manner simultaneously making them fresh. Dandelion does that as well but leans more towards a few more serious poems in tone. This makes them a […]

Sassy Girl Detective

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley

October 30, 2020 by LanierHgts Leave a Comment

BINGO GREEN I love me a good mystery novel and I love, love, love the heroine/main character in this book, Flavia DeLuce.  Flavia is the 11 year old youngest daughter of  Colonel DeLuce, the head of the county seat/manor.  Flavia has two older sisters who torment her as much as possible (Ophelia is boy obsessed and Daphne is book obsessed).  But Flavia, who is chemistry obsessed and spends her time in the old Victorian chemistry lab in her home learning about poisons, gives as good […]

“Of course it doesn’t make sense—what business do you have expecting things to make sense?”

Solutions and Other Problems by Allie Brosh

October 29, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

She has leaned into it. All of it. I have been on an existential journey. I read this whole thing last night after I got home from work. My one complaint about it that I have right now is that hardcover is the wrong format for this book. My wrists hurt! It’s so heavy! I mean, it’s a beautiful book, but at points genuinely physically hard to read. I imagine if I had some sort of tablet or color Kindle that would be ideal. If […]

Everything Awesome about Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Beasts! by Mike Lowery

October 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I could not finish Everything Awesome about Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Beasts! by Mike Lowery not because it was bad, but because it was awesome and I had to go back to work and not sit and read. Also, (long story, please get comfy) this was part of a set of books we received that were free from an online event at work. I decided to do the nice thing and give them to some people who had some other free swag coming to them. Therefore, […]

Two sets of friends for two new early readers

Do You Like My Bike (Hello, Hedgehog #1)? by Norm Feuti

Bunbun & Bonbon: Fancy Friends, by Jess Keating

October 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The nice thing about working in a bookstore is that you can find books you might not be exposed to otherwise. I can pick up a book that would not be first on my list to read, read it, then find out who the perfect audience is. Or not recommend it at all. (Yes, I am looking at you zombie Christmas tree book). And here are a few of my thoughts on two books that are meant for the younger crowd to see if you […]
