Fly My Pretties! Oh wait, wrong witch…. !

Witches of Brooklyn by Sophie Escabasse

December 21, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Witches of Brooklyn is more of a 3.5 review and not 3. This is because it was not an “OMG LOVE!” nor was it, “OMG HATE!” read. There is a lot going on, but at the same time it is an easy story to follow. Good guys are good, bad guys are … well there are not “bad guys” just one spoiled pop-princess and people with no sense of visiting at decent hours of the day or night (depending on what you consider 1 AM). […]

You wish there were only lions and tigers and bears in this forest

Kerry and the Knight of the Forest by Andi Watson

December 21, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I felt as if I was reading a Grimm’s Fairytale, only nicer (even with the darker elements) by the time I finished Kerry and the Knight of the Forest by Andi Watson. There is a medieval feeling to the text. There is the “peasant” looking child, Kerry (and with flashbacks/memories his family are farmers also dressed in that peasant looking garb). And to make things a little more interesting, most of the action is shown in wordless images. It does not rely on text to […]

Battle on my Cousin!

13th Street V01 Battle of the Bad-Breath Bats by David Bowels

December 21, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are three kids on the cover of this book. One is being carried off by a giant bat. I think it is safe to say, when one sees this, they can assume this is going to be a fantasy novel. I would even assume that it would be a fantasy mystery (after all why is there a giant bat, why are the people running and why is the girl wearing a yellow duck floaty around her waist?). And Battle of the Bad-Breath Bats, the […]

The Bat, The Cat and The Woman

Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale by Lauren Myracle

Batman: Nightwalker by Stuart Moore

Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Louise Simonson

December 21, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I just read that if you act in a DC movie or Marvel movie, you are now part of that franchise and cannot crossover. In fact, you are not even allowed to go to a premier of the other franchise less it confuses fans. Thankfully, as a fan of both franchises (or at least a few characters in each) I can watch whatever or read any graphic novel I want. And I wanted to read some DC graphic novels for the teenage age range. I […]

Crazy New BEST Friend?!

I Want to be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom

December 18, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 8 Comments

I must start by thanking ASKReviews for letting us all know that there was a SECRET MUSICAL in the middle of this audiobook! I heeded their recommendation to “Get the Audio Version”, and boy howdy am I glad I did! Not only do we get a musical adventure about Rachel Bloom’s desire to be a musical theater STAAAR, the musical is performed by her harmonizing with herself, herself, herself, herself, and maybe another Rachel Bloom or two. Bloom’s voice is so important here; her style, […]

Fine

Survival of the Thickest by Michelle Buteau

December 18, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

Best for: Big fans of Michelle Buteau In a nutshell: Author and Comedian Michelle Buteau provides a look into her life, sharing both the highs and the lows. CN for miscarriage. Worth quoting: N/A (Audio book) Why I chose it: I very much enjoyed Buteau in Always Be My Maybe. I’ve recently watched her Netflix special, which also got me chuckling. Review: I’m struggling a bit with this review. There are parts of this book that I really loved. She tells a great story, she’s […]
