“A city like Ankh-Morpork was only two meals away from chaos at the best of times.”

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett

April 17, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Oh, what to say about a Terry Pratchett book that can’t be summed up as “just read it!” in increasingly louder tones? AS I said in my review of Wintersmith, the worst Terry Pratchett book is better than some of the best examples of other authors’ works. And this book has to be in my opinion one of his best. Sam Vimes, Commander of the City Watch, is soon to be a father, which means perhaps chasing Carcer, one of the more dangeous of Ankh-Morpork’s […]

“Impossible things are really rough to do, you know.”

The Shattered Lens: Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson

April 12, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Like give a positive review of this book. By the fourth book, you should really know how you feel about the characters, and be invested in the plot; I don’t, and I’m not. Alcatraz just gets smarmier and more annoying each page, and the rest of the characters seem like they’re just walking through their parts, reading off lines to move the plot along. Not that most of them really come off as fully fleshed out characters anymore; they’re mostly named clothes hangers to hang […]

Sisters, differences and love

Little Big Sister by Eoin Colfer

April 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I picked up Little Big Sister by Eoin Colfer and illustrated by Celia Ivey because the cover was terribly brightly colored and pushy to the eye.  I read it because I like sibling stories (sister stories in particular) and thought it would be an interesting read on differently abled children/people. And while it was not my favourite read, it was a read that I enjoyed and recommend if you have a family member, friend or a child’s classmate who has dwarfism. Therefore, the rating of […]

100% You

You Are 25% Banana by Susie Brooks

April 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You Are 25% Banana by Susie Brooks and illustrated by Josy Bloggs was not just a fun book to read, and one that is a must have for the classroom and your inquisitive child (and as an adult I learned a few things too), but it also inspired a very wackado (and not really completed) poem by yours truly. This picture book is a great way to introduce  astonishing facts that show how we’re all related to every living thing on the planet and what […]

Mafalda: Book One by Quino

April 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mafalda: Book One by Quino (author/illustrator) and translated by Frank Wynne is an adult Argentina comic. The ideas remind me of a modern Danae from Non Sequitur, Nancy and Sluggo from the Nancy by Olivia James, and Phoebe and her Unicorn (without the unicorn) by Dana Simpson. Unfortunately, some of the themes are dated (Vietnam; getting your first television) but others are universal (kids ragging on their parents). The overall issues still resonate. The country might be Argentina but politics are politics (Mafalda our naive, […]

“We’re all born naked and the rest is drag” (RuPaul) And this novel SLAYS

Donutella Hamachi and the Library Avengers by Kim Chi, Stephan Lee, and Utomaru

April 11, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The novel/part graphic novel or novel with several illustrations that make up the narrator’s special world in Donutella Hamachi and the Library Avengers started out strong. Then Kim Chi, Stephan Lee, and Utomaru’s story started to drag. Pun intended. But in all seriousness, I was just as upset as the kids when I learned that the DragQueen story hour (that I had never seen/had been canceled before the book started) had been Karen-cancelled. I was rooting for Jae Han and their friends to find themselves, […]
