A few years ago, I came to the realization that I did not have to finish a book, if I wasn’t enjoying it. This was – to say the least – a startling revelation for me, because I had previously trudged through every. single. word. of every. single. book., even if I despised it. It led to some pretty miserable reading days. But since I’ve stopped doing that, I not only read more, I enjoy what I’m reading more, because I know that I’m reading […]
Picture books, helping me get closer to Cannonball
Maxwell The Monkey Barber by Cale Atkinson – Super cute, quick read, catchy refrain, and a smart, caring monkey barber make this title a good addition to your kid’s library. I’m a Lot of Sometimes by Jack Guinan – The subtitle (A Growing-Up Story of Identity) is apt, the art work cheery and entertaining; the story, informative without being too preachy. Definitely fits into the “what the heck are feelings and what do I do with them” genre of picture books that’s essential if you’ve […]
Thor needs to keep track of his shit.
What a silly book. At this point I think I’ve given up expecting to see anything new from Rick Riordan, and yet I’m going to keep reading his books, so I think I shall make a vow to not talk about how repetitive they are, and how he just keeps doing the same thing over and over again with variations. After that sentence I mean. In the future I shall call this The Riordan Factor and link back to this review as an explanation. It […]
It’s the final countdown! My first Cannonball!
So I finally achieved it! My first Cannonball 😆. I’m proud of myself. I know people have done doubles, triples, and even quadruple Cannonballs, but right now, 52 books is good for me. I’m off from work this whole week, so I anticipated finishing earlier, and possibly even going over 52. I thoroughly underestimated my laziness though, so I’m getting this one in right under the wire. I’ve always been a great procrastinator though. My motto is “why do today something you can put off […]
Ending as I began..
I committed to a half-Cannonball, so this is me accomplishing a goal! I began as I intend to finish, with a book by my all-time favourite author, Maurice Sendak. My squishies are legendary lovers of books. I have bought and shared many many precious books with them, but this one, I admit, I have hoarded in my bedroom, away from their often-sticky fingers. So now it is a special book that the Littlest Squishie loves to look at when ever she is allowed to invade […]
Saving the world for dogs.
The Android was always one of my favorite Animorphs books when I was a kid because, even before I knew what it was, I loved worldbuilding in fiction. This is one of the reasons I love serialized storytelling so much, because serialized stories (no matter the medium) are the ones that have the most room to deepen and define their fictionalized worlds without sacrificing character or theme. And The Android does quite a bit of worldbuilding in a short period of time. We’re introduced to […]
