Rereading and Co-Writing with Angry Dimples – Harry Potter for Sanity and Resistance, Book 3

March 10, 2017 by Emmalita 12 Comments

This is the last of the Harry Potter books that I consider to be within the Children’s genre. After this, I will label them as YA. Joining me in this review is Angry Dimples, a Pajiban and new Cannonballer. We have no respect for new readers. If you don’t know the whole series, stop reading now. There will be no spoiler coddling! My main prompt for starting The Great 2017 Harry Potter Reread was Angry Dimples. She started her own reread and wanted to talk […]

Just as good as I remembered!

So, my library was having a new front door installed, so everyone had to temporarily enter through the basement door, which is where the bargain sale books are.  So, despite having *two* stacks of unread books at home, I bought some.  One of them was Tamora Pierce’s First Test, which takes place in the “medieval and fantastic realm of Tortall.”  I loved these books when I was younger, so I forked over my $0.25 for a bit of nostalgia.  The King’s Champion Alanna the Lioness […]

A much-hyped middle-grade book that wasn’t my cuppa, but still worth the read.

My library book club is reading R.J. Palacio’s Wonder for March, which has been on my to-read list for several years now. I like reading young adult and middle-grade fiction, because I get a sense of what kids read and what they like. I’ll be interested to hear how my peers found Wonder, because I just finished it yesterday and am processing a whole bunch of thoughts. Wonder is the story of August (or Auggie) Pullman, a ten-year-old boy with craniofacial anomalies, starting with a […]

A tender look into the mind of a girl with Asperger’s.

I never read the Baby-Sitters Club series as a kid (my mom was all about her kids reading classics and not paperbacks), so I missed out on that cultural phenomenon. I did know who Ann M. Martin was, and when I was browsing books at Barnes and Noble, I saw a new book of hers that was not at all Baby-Sitters Club-related. The book jacket description intrigued me, and I put in a hold at the library. I admit that while I have a soft […]

Rereading Harry Potter for Sanity and Resistance, Book 2

February 24, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

The second Harry Potter book is not my favorite in the series. It’s not bad, it’s just not my favorite. I am going to assume that if you are reading this review you are familiar with the series and I’m not going to worry about spoilers. That said, it’s the one where some very important political ideas are brought forward – most importantly, how do we divide ourselves, how do we treat people who are not exactly like us? Dobie the House Elf makes his […]

Too cute for words (but I’ll try)!

I took my first trip to Yellowstone last summer and in one of the official gift shops in the Park, I picked up this innocent little book as a souvenir–supporting the Park Service and all that! Originally published in 1932, Cubby in Wonderland tells the story of a mother bear and her cub as they travel from Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone and the many interesting critters they meet along the way. I’ll confess, during the opening pages I was all set to make some good-natured jokes about this book, like how […]
