This book seriously messed with me as a kid.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

I have misremembered or forgotten entire books and plotlines from this series, something which I’ve discovered over and over again in this re-read of mine. But I did not forget this book. This book I remembered very clearly. It made a HUGE impression on me as a kid. This is the one where Cassie quits the Animorphs because she’s finding herself willing to do more and more horrible things in the name of defeating the Yeerks, and she doesn’t want to become that person. She […]

Dinosaurs aren’t fun, they are terrifying: A public service message by K.A. Applegate.

December 28, 2017 by narfna Leave a Comment

So this is the one where the Animorphs get blown back in time 65 million years by a nuclear explosion, and they fight dinosaurs and almost get eaten a bunch of times and discover that the Earth wasn’t always as alien free as we thought. I mean, you hear that premise, and you think, Ooh, fun! Dinosaurs! Time travel! But this book is the Animorphs doing dinosaurs and time travel, so that means it’s all kinds of messed up. No Jurassic Park wonder and fun times to be found. […]

Fox and friends

December 26, 2017 by Sophia Leave a Comment

Pax by Sara Pennypacker is a young adult novel geared for kids aged eight to twelve. I first saw it on NPR’s Best Books of 2016 List, but it is also on the National Book Award Long List. I often enjoy young adult novels because they have a sweet simplicity that is appealing. I also enjoyed reading Pax. Peter is twelve years old and has been living with his dad and caring for his pet fox, Pax, for five years. He found Pax as a kit and the two […]

A slightly more realistic fairy tale

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

[Note – this review contains spoilers] I had a few free minutes in the library, so I picked up this graphic novel version of Snow White. This takes us out of the normal fairy tale and sticks us in New York City in 1928. A young Samantha White, called “Snow”, loses her mother at a young age. Her father, a wealthy businessman, is dazzled by a famous actress and marries her 10 years after becoming a widower.  She sends the now teenaged Snow off to […]

Better late than never? Maybe not…

December 10, 2017 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

7th Grade Revolution is ‘based on true events.’ The book drops us in the story after the 7th grade has revolted, and the students learn of their success.  But I’m left with questions.  How did they revolt?  Why?  And why was it successful?  Was it some sort of plan by the staff as a learning exercise?  And why did it make national news?  (This is about the extent of the ‘true events.’) As I read, there were some questions that did get get answered.  I […]

Accio Cannonball

December 7, 2017 by Ellesfena 14 Comments

Cannonball! Reading the Harry Potter series this time felt different than past times. I’m several years older than I was last time I read them, and this time I was reading them not just for fun, but to review for CBR (it makes a difference, I’ve found. . .). It’s also a time in American history when reading about the fight against the Death Eaters and their focus on purebloods is a little more uncomfortable than it has been in the past (I am not […]
