Working in an independent bookstore means you get to be exposed to many different genres, but I always go back to my favorite: children’s literature. Being a fiction gal means non-fiction is rarely fun. But Women Who Dared: 52 Stories of Fearless Daredevils, Adventurers, and Rebel is grand fun. Fifty-two women who have shaped the world by doing things “women are not supposed to do” are introduced with one page biographies. Most were women rarely (if ever) heard of. A few (such as Bessie Coleman) […]
It’s such a relief when a childhood favorite stands the test of time.
I probably read A Wrinkle in Time for the first time when I was about eight or nine years old, and I have to say that for a book born the same year I was, it seems to have aged quite well. I was pleased to remember so much about the characters and the main story, though as a shy, young misfit myself, somewhat like Meg Murry, I imagine her personality resonated with me quite a lot at the time. As an adult, and a parent now, […]
Politically Correct Bedtime Stories
I find a lot of our fairy tales/bedtime stories have been watered down overtime from their very blunt, graphic depictions of what happens when you don’t follow society’s rules or confront evil. Coming across the ” Politically Correct Bedtime Stories” intrigued me for this reason. There’s also been a lot discussion around political correctness and whether we’ve gone to far with it. In this book, it’s definitely gone way too far. The book starts with Little Red Ridding Hood and ends with the Pied Piper. […]
Choose kindness first
“Shall we make a new rule of life…always to try to be a little kinder than is necessary?” (299) Just the other day, we were talking at work about the hardest times for kids as they grow up. I said, unequivocally, that middle school was the worst for me. I didn’t have a particularly bad time of it, but I think there was a reason I had a spate of migraines during middle school. Middle school kids have an astounding capacity for cruelty. August Pullman, […]
Dolittle the Animal Lover
In my quest to read all the Newbery Medal winners, I decided to tackle one of the oldest books given this award and The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle. I had a hard time getting through this, and I need to be honest here, I skimmed a lot of this book. A LOT. If it weren’t for my stated goal of reading all the Newbery Medal Winners, I don’t think would have done finished the book. The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle won the Newbery Medal in […]
This is the last book! I thought there were two more!
Well, if this is the last new Riordan book I ever read, it’s a great one to go out on. Despite my fatigue with Riordan’s shenanigans, I’ve actually really enjoyed this series. It was *just* fresh enough, with the Norse mythology and some all-time great characters of types he hadn’t written before to make it worth my time (Hearthstone and Alex Fierro are my children). I also appreciated that it was a trilogy, and not a stretched out quadrology (I was super surprised several weeks ago […]
