Count Down to Yoga

January 5, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a little girl needs to do a little yoga, she counts the ways to do the poses…. literally. This yoga book for children combines animal poses that children can do and counting. Fun text combined with bright, soft colorful images has never made educational look so good! Yoga books are never my thing. Honestly, they can be a little “preachy” most of the time. Yet, this book is very straight forward. “We do a yoga pose” end of story. The counting of the animals […]

God rest her soul and may she never walk at night

January 5, 2018 by melanir 4 Comments

The Screaming Staircase is the first book in Jonathon Stroud’s Lockwood & Co. series. It is a creepy ghost story murder mystery featuring young teen and pre-teen protagonists and it kept this many-years-past-her-teens lady up at night. There were some things about the world building that bothered me, though I can see why Stroud did what he did, however as a whole this book was highly enjoyable and I will be checking out the remaining four books in the series. This book is set in […]

Mice Skating Away with Your Heart

January 4, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This mouse will not stay in the house….even though it is winter and very cold outside! Field mice do not like the cold…but Lucy loves the snow crunching under her paws and how the cold makes her whiskers feel. Her friends want to stay warm inside, but Lucy wants them to come out and play so she can show off her new skills and all the winter fun she has been having. Some of her attempts do not pan out…but soon she figures out how […]

Pity Poor Mrs. Popper

January 3, 2018 by Tragic Sandwich Leave a Comment

We’ve started reading chapter books to Baguette at bedtime. Our first was The Trumpet of the Swan by E.B. White. Neither Mr. Sandwich nor I had read that as children, and we’re continuing that with our next selection: Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. On its surface, the story is cute enough. A seasonally unemployed house painter unexpectedly takes delivery of a penguin, and hijinks ensue. There is a second penguin, and then little penguins, and more hijinks. Baguette is enjoying the story, […]

I Wonder About Wonder

January 3, 2018 by Melina Leave a Comment

My book club picked Wonder for this month of January and I decided to be a good book club member (for once) and actually read the book I’m supposed to, rather than the books that I want to read.  I read the entire thing in almost one sitting which means that I was avoiding something else in my life (grading and laundry, I stopped to play with some Shopkins and a certain blond 5 year old who wanted me to hang with her). I Wonder […]

Kicking off CBR10 by re-reading a childhood favorite.

January 2, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

I still need to go back and write my review of the David trilogy (the previous three books in this series, which make up an informal trilogy), which didn’t get posted in 2017 alas and alack, but I wanted to make sure and get this review out before I start my next book of 2018. Once again, it seems, I’m starting out the year with an Animorphs Chronicles book, which are hands down my favorite books of the series. These books are honestly one of […]
