Across the universe

February 23, 2018 by Shibuyama Leave a Comment

Yes, I’m one of those; I was going to reread A Wrinkle in Time because the movie is coming out, even before the book club announcement. I mean, I’m going to see it anyway (whenever my country gets it) because I trust Ava DuVernay, but I wanted to familiarize myself with the original again in advance. I first picked up the book in fourth grade, and I confess I did not appreciate at the time the opening line of “It was a dark and stormy […]

Swimming with Sharks

One word: WOW. Okay, two more words: Wow! Wow! This book is interesting for two main reasons, it brings science to the public without getting too technical and it is giving you a look at a woman (Eugenie Clark) who did not just do well in a “man’s world” but excelled. The afterwards tells of Clark in more detail. Such as, yes, you realize right off when you see “woman” and “science” you know she will face discrimination. As soon as you see when she […]

A *shrug* and a *yawn*

February 23, 2018 by Beth Ellen 1 Comment

So I first read A Wrinkle in Time around 20 years ago. That’s my best guess. I remembered nothing about it, except that I did not like it at all, on a fairly strong level. So when I heard they were making a new movie I shrugged, but then it was directed by Ava DuVernay (yes), staring a diverse cast (YES), and then the trailer dropped. All in. Alllllll in. And it’s our bookclub book today! Reread commencing. I’m going to skip the plot synopsis […]

Mama Africa!

February 22, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I have enjoyed the few things I have read by Kathryn Erskine. And Mama Africa does not disappoint either. Who was Miriam Makeba? Probably few people can answer that. I know I could not before reading Mama Africa!: How Miriam Makeba Spread Hope with Her Song. She was a singer who was like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and sang protest songs. She was a woman like Nelson Mandela and helped lead her people to freedom. She was a fighter. She was an activist.  She […]

“What you learn today, for no reason at all, will help you discover all the wonderful secrets of tomorrow.”

My father is an excellent book narrator. He was in theater in high school and college (because quote “that’s where all the babes were.”) so he does all the voices and all the sounds. He was the ideal father for a bedtime story and my nephews are currently reaping the benefits of his talents. When we were younger my dad would also play rhyming games with my sister and me, driving our mother crazy, and even now he is always there with a pun. All of […]

“We do not know what things look like. We know what things are like. It must be a very limiting thing, this seeing.”

February 21, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

I still love this. The last time I read A Wrinkle in Time was ten years ago. I hadn’t read the book in years before that, and barely remembered it, except for a few images that had burned into my subconscious (the man with the red eyes, for example; the Murry’s vegetable garden and their laboratory; Charles Wallace; and I remembered that I thought it was terrifying). It’s basically impossible for me to read or review it now without my childhood impressions coloring it. Because […]
