Amazon’s description of a Season of Flowers by Michael Garland starts off with the listing of the different flowers (Snowdrops and crocuses yield to tulips…) brings out the song “A few of my favorite things” loudly in my minds ear. The book itself brings out the inner artist eye. As well as the inner poet. And while this book many not become one of my favorite things, it is well up there in the “I like this a lot” category. From Spring to Summer to […]
I’m a Duck (Quack Quack)
Am I the only one who thinks when they see the words, “I’m a Duck”, you have to follow it up with, “Quack. Quack”? No? Just me? It is all good. But you now must read “I’m a Duck” by Eve Bunting and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand. And even if you do not quack along, you will be rooting for the little duck in this story. One day, an egg rolled out of the nest and into a deep pond. This caused the egg, now […]
Daddy Played the Blues
There are a few books that have that OMG starting sentence. Daddy Played the Blues has one with: “I was six years old the day we left the farm in Mississippi,” Our heroine Cassie is not really the focus of the book. But Music is. Blues music in fact. In a fiction format we learn about a family that packed up everything they owned in their truck with her Daddy, Uncle and Mama in the front and Cassie and her two brothers in the back. […]
Drama, on and off stage, and getting knickers in a twist in real life
Raina Telgemeier is amazing and I wish she had been writing when I was a tween. As it is, I’m happy to be able to give these books to my daughters and enjoy the nostalgia they bring me. Her first two graphic novels are autobiographical, Smile and Sisters. This time around she drew from her life experiences of middle school and doing theater to create an original work titled Drama, and it has lived up to it’s name. In 2015 Drama had the honor of being on the “Most frequently […]
I wanted to like it …
I didn’t read this one immediately after downloading it, so when the novel didn’t initially click for me, I blamed myself for forgetting that the main character was 12. I had been thinking of it as a YA novel, but with the ages being around 12, it isn’t quite YA, which of course leads to slightly misaligned expectations. “Oh,” I thought, “when they meant it’s like Harry Potter, they didn’t just mean magic, they meant age-wise, too.” However, when the novel continued to not quite […]
Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter
I have mentioned that a perk to working in a bookstore is seeing things before they come out. The other perk is finding a book you might not have found if you were not surrounded by all types of books. Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter is one of those finds. I found this book while cleaning out older reader copies. I enjoy pictures books as an adult as they are fun, quick reads. And as someone who likes giving books, a picture book can be a […]
