I have had the pleasure of reading two different books about Ruth Bader Ginsburg. While they cover the same territory (the life of Ginsburg), they tell it in two different ways. No Truth Without Ruth: The Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg by Kathleen Krull and Nancy Zhang and I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark by Debbie Levy and Elizabeth Baddeley are introductions to a woman who fought for the rights first of herself, then for women and finally equal rights for both woman […]
Voices from the Underground Railroad
Kay Winters and Larry Day combine their talents to create Voices from the Underground Railroad. These poems tell the story of two slaves trying to escape their master and find then their brother up north. Each poem is told from the point of view of the brother and sister, the conductors, the woman who owned them and even the slave hunters telling their stories. The poems cover the fears they are feeling, the dangers they are facing and the thoughts that cause them to be […]
You can be kind too
I Am Enough by debut collaborators Grace Byers and Keturah A. Bobo is a story of self-confidence and kindness for girls everywhere. They show girls of all backgrounds and colors. I would have liked to have seen both girls and boys laughing, singing, running races together. But with that said it is a lovely book with even more lovely illustrations. Meant for a younger audience to have it read to them, the slightly older reader could read it to a younger sibling. In Digger and […]
All the Animals Where I Live
Philip C. Stead has created a book that talks about the animals he will have in and around his home in the country. The narrator of the story (the author and illustrator) takes the reader on a proud tour of their home. The tone is classical with some modern twists. He shows how human, animals and nature all share the same space in All the Animals Where I live. The illustrations are soft and airy. The colors do not overwhelm and pop where and when […]
Grandma’s Purse
Grandma Mimi is Mary Poppins. Okay, so it seems like she is Ms. Poppins because of her own “magical” purse. It does not hold anything that a regular purse would not hold (earrings, mirror, hair pins, scarf, candy, etc.), but somehow, it is extra special because it is Mimi’s bag. Or at least her granddaughter thinks so. The great thing about the book is it is just a story about a granddaughter and her grandmother. They have fun dressing up, talking, looking at pictures, sharing […]
A Night Out
First and foremost, these are fantastic illustrations. The colors are dark and rich. They are vibrant and pop off the page. Vanessa Brantley-Newton’s illustrations make the book worth having just for them. They show a loving family doing what families do: getting up in the morning, teasing each other, eating and getting ready for parties. However, I am not sure what the party was. Is it really a premier to some event? Was it really a red-carpet affair? I am leaning towards, no, it is […]
