You can’t go home again

May 28, 2018 by Dusty Highway 1 Comment

I still remember watching E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial in the theater as a kid. The nearest movie theater was an hour’s drive from our little town in the Deep Midwest, so we didn’t get to go more than a few times a year. I’d been begging my parents to take us to see E.T. for weeks when they finally surprised me for my 8th birthday. I was enchanted from the start, so wrapped up in the story by the time Eliot said goodbye to E.T. that […]

Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up

May 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Finally, a book that I can say, “DANG!” about and not have anything really negative to say about it. Earth Verse: Haiku from the Ground Up by Sally M. Walker and illustrated by William Grill has everything in it I am looking for in a book: good text, good facts, a story within those facts and interesting artwork. It also is accessible to the reader. It might not become a classic, but it is modern and would be a great addition to a personal or […]

Ships Ahoy!

May 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Antlered Ship is a bizarre little book. I have to say, while I do not hate it, I have done multiple reads on it and still am not truly sure what I think about it. The most interesting part of the book is the fantasticalness of it, but it hints at the realism of animals. A fox sets off on a seafaring voyage with the crew being deer and pigeons. One meat eater on the ship does make cause for worry by this reader. […]

Possum Adventure

May 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Possum, the lead character of Possum’s Harvest Moon by Anne Hunter is back in Possum and the Summer Storm. First, Hunter’s illustrious are fantastic. They are lighthearted, realistic and full of their own details and story. Second, this is a sweet story of a daddy possum and the little possums and what happens after their home is washed away in the storm. Finally, I was missing some scientific information. I was wondering, “Isn’t it the mother possum and not the father possum who takes care […]

Walnut Animal Society is Curious

May 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Magnolia the Bunny explores the grove she lives in and has created a map of all the wonderful places she and her friends are able to see there. However, she has one spot she has not completed on the map. Can she finish it in time for the big revel at the Walnut Animal Society Soiree? To try and finish her map, Magnolia and a couple of her friends (who are curious like their manifesto tells them to be) go off to explore that last […]

Because I had teachers and confidence

May 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I give a graduation gift, I tend to not give books. However, this graduation season I have found three that I really like. Jason Reynolds’ For Every One for the teen to adult and for the younger children You Can!: Words of Wisdom from the Little Engine That Could based on Watty Piper’s Little Engine and for teachers Because I Had a Teacher by Yamada Kobi. It is these last two I will focus on as I’ve already reviewed For Every One.  You Can […]
