The Dance of the Violin

June 13, 2018 by BlackRaven 4 Comments

The Dance of the Violin is a delightful story about a young boy who loves music and finds a way to always play. And will use anything to make music: pots and pans and even rubber bands. This is when his family buys him a violin. One day he tells everyone he has to partake in a contest. It will be his first, but even so, he tells his teacher he must play this one piece of music, even though it is one of the […]

A Peaceful Garden and book

June 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While I like the colors, the illustrations are lacking something for me. The story is very simple and would make a nice “story time” read. The story also could use a bit “more” for me personally, yet I do think it is the perfect amount for the targeted audience.   Perhaps I have read too many spring and relaxing type of books as I did not find anything new with A Peaceful Garden. However, Lucy London and Christa Peirce do combine their talents creatively and […]

Fox and the Bike Ride

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

There are a few things I am not crazy about (foxes “trick” is not cool fox, not cool at all). But the joke about the snack that is meant for Fox is amusing. Fox and the Bike Ride is a modern story that does not always resonate with me. I like parts of the book but mostly I do not. The modern child will like the fact that fox is sneaky and the adventure.   The illustrations are interesting. Why does a turtle need a […]

Make It and your knowledge Grow

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Overall, I like this book. There is nothing wrong with it. I just do not think it is something as an adult I will reread. I can see kids enjoying it for the flap surprises and the engaging colors of the illustrations. The fact it is a see/learn about colors and habitats book/an educational book as well means it would be great for a preschool classroom as well as the toddler set. Make it Grow: Bring Nature to Life by Lifting the Flaps by Debbie […]

Graphic Novel Flop

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am not sure if there were pages missing from my copy or there is a series before this that filled in some blanks, but the entire time I was reading I felt like I was in the middle of the story. I never saw what I would consider a beginning and when it ended I was thinking “Wait…that’s it? Shouldn’t there have been some kind of wrap up?” I know this is a series, but still the story ends where it started, in the […]

I Am a Bird

June 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I Am a Bird is a great bedtime story. The fact that the character is not mentioned if they are male or female allows it to be an “anyone story.” The illustrations are amazing sweet and simple but wonderfully detailed, too. I would assume by the traditionally stereotypical clothing and hair, that it is a father and son story. Therefore, it would make a nice Father’s Day read-together. However, looking at the cover again, I could easily say this was an older brother or even […]
