This is my favorite thing Riordan has written in years. I think partially I liked it so much because I had such trouble with the first two books in this series, enough that I was almost 100% sure I would stop reading his books after this series was through. I think I’m going to reevaluate that decision based on how much I enjoyed reading The Burning Maze. We’ll see. But aside from liking it simply because it was better than the first two is not […]
Stick Your Head in the Sand
I was drawn to The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the World’s Coral Reefs: The Story of Ken Nedimyer and the Coral Restoration Foundation because of the illustrations. Yes, do not judge a book by its cover, but also yes, it can grab a reader’s attention to see if they want to “check it out” and I did. I did not pay attention to the author while reading. Sometimes that can take away from a picture book for me. However, I was not really surprised to […]
A Great Read for Young Feminists in the Making
I probably should have reread ElCicco’s review before I started this novel since I unfortunately interpreted the word “reimagining” loosely, and was a bit disappointed with some of the topics the novel didn’t explore. However, if I had read the review again, I would have known that this is a fairly loyal retelling as far as the scope of the story goes. Basically, O’Neill did such a great job of building the kingdom under the sea that I wanted to spend more time there, get […]
Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert (Maybe)
Sophie is a unicorn expert. And if you do not believe her, she will tell you. And she does that in Sophie Johnson, Unicorn Expert. She knows everything there is to know about unicorns: what they should do, what they should learn, how they should look, what they should eat, even that their horns grow back if they lose them. Sometimes her mother does not agree with how Sophie teaches them (as mothers do not realize that magic is more important than cleaning up messes). […]
Zita the Spacegirl to the rescue. Sort of……
Zita the Spacegirl is not your parent’s graphic novel. Oh, there are space aliens, portals to other worlds, robots and evil creatures, but there is also a spunky girl who is smart, funny and realistic. Ben Hatke has created a graphic novel that will introduce readers to the genre, but readers will enjoy as well. Aimed at ages eight to 10, both boys and girls can read. Yes, Zita is a girl but she is a tomboy. Her best friend is the goofy, nerdy boy. […]
Similarities don’t stop with our cats
Niblet & Ralph by Zachariah OHora has a real classic look to it but at the same time it gives it a refreshing look. There is nothing flashy about the illustrations therefore, it does not distract from the story itself. Also, while there is detail, they are subtle and you have to pay attention to them. The humor of the unrealness of the cats talking on the phone will have the younger crowd snickering but all ages will relate to the fact that sometimes you […]
