If you read the first book, don’t read this book. Imagine your own ending. #CBRBingo

No question, this is the weakest book in this series by quite a large margin. Before I read it, I saw the sharp drop in the ratings for it, and I almost couldn’t believe it. The first two books were solid, what could possibly be so bad about this one? Well. Those ratings make sense now, because this book was aggressively incompetent. What were cute and comforting levels of predictability in the first two books became clichéd and eyeroll-worthy in this one. The problem, I […]

Not as good as the first, but still fun.

This wasn’t as purely fun as the first one, but it was almost as predictable, hence my 3.5 star rating, instead of the full four (rounding up, though, because not as fun is still fun). Spoilers for the first book below. Seriously, don’t read any further if you haven’t read it. I’m about to spoil a central plot point. The Runaway King picks up a month after the close of the last book, with Jaron having taken the throne and left his false identity as […]

Right book, right time.

This is one of those times where a book hit me just right, and it was just what I was in the mood for at the time of reading it. I was craving something fluffy and maybe a tad predictable, yet comforting, after reading some downer books about tough subjects. And this perfectly fit the bill. I’m not the target audience for this book, at all, but I still really enjoyed it. (I would have been obsessed if I’d read it when I was a […]

Ants are not the only uninvited guest here!

August 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The cat-and-mouse game has a new twist with best friends Oliver and Philbert. They are the main characters in Picnic with Oliver (a companion sequel to Tea with Oliver). They are two unusual best friends who go out on a picnic, despite that it looks like it might rain. This, of course, means trouble for our friends. Mika Song creates a lovely story of friendship, adventure and adaptability. While having read the first book might have filled in a few “holes in the story” this […]

Attention: Lena is Excited but her shoes? Not so much!

August 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Lena’s Shoes Are Nervous: A First-Day-Of-School Dilemma is a new take on an old theme: child is nervous about the first day of school. Instead of Lena saying she is nervous, Keith Calabrese has Lena’s shoes show their apprehension and has Lena telling her father they are nervous. The combination of a child’s imagination (the dress and shoes do not speak but everyone loves the green headband) and the real feelings will be humorous for most readers. And while I appreciate the story and the […]

Halt! Who Goes there? Friends or Foes…?

August 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you read advanced reader copies you should be careful about three things: will the text change (therefore, be careful when quoting); will the cover art change and finally will the title change. Friends and Foes: Poems About Us All has at least two of these. It has the change in name and cover image (though I am keeping the image of the F&G as I liked how it came out!) Douglas Florian is a poet known for being deliciously fun, whimsical and quirky. Some […]
