The ups and downs of routine changes

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The team of Audrey Vernick, Liz Garton Scanlon and Chris Raschka probably had a substitute teacher or two during their school days. However, I wonder if they were as unsure of them as the narrator is of their substitute teacher in Dear Substitute. Finding out that their teacher is out unexpectantly (why did Mrs. Giordano not warn them?) all sorts of feelings pop up for one student. After all, Miss Pelly changes their routines, cannot pronounce some of the student’s names, she reads new books […]

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Yo ho ho! And a bottle of Milk! Listen up you scurry mates! I have one whale of a tale to tell you about! When one tough pirate… bus driver… is all about how brrrave and strrrong pirrrates… I mean kinderrrgarteners are when they are off to their first day of school. That is, until his beloved parrot, Polly, flies off because of stormy seas…. Ah… bumpy roads. This leaves him to show that he might not be so brave himself after all. But with […]

“Five silly ghosts floating by a gate. The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late.”

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Five silly ghosts floating by a gate. The first one said, “Oh my, it’s getting late.”   But it is not too late for you to pick up Five Silly Ghosts for your special witch, ghost, pirate, alien, princess, or goblin! Five Silly Ghosts is a little board book with the same “five little ghost” story (counting, rhyming and having fun) that we have seen before. There is nothing new for the person who knows this rhyme. However, it is still great for the toddler […]

The Spooky Express series is coming to town

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Spooky Express: Vermont by Eric James and Marcin Piwowarski is an introduction to the state (in this one Vermont) and the monsters of Halloween. The kids hop on the train like The Polar Express and off they go. It is meant for the younger crowd, due to the innocence of the text of James and illustrations of Piwowarski. Each book in the series is in the rhyming text and format of The Night Before Christmas rhyme.   The overall look and idea of the […]

Click your clack and Moo your moo….unless You’re in school….or can you?

August 24, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Click, Clack, Quack to School by that fabulous team of Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin has Duck still being ducky, but it needs a little more…something! I am not sure what that something is, but this addition to the Click, Clack, Moo series is missing the “muchness” that was found with the others. With that said, it is a nice book to read on the first day or school or on a day that school has been going for a while. This book is not […]

Sugary sweetness and a lot of fur, claws and cuteness

August 23, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is my Brain Candy (mmm candy…) Kids will love Fuzzy’s Great Escape (Class Pets #1) by Bruce Hale. Me? I enjoyed it, even with the fact that there were a few holes in the story line for me. The story seems to start in the middle of a series. Perhaps there was another series that introduced Fuzzy and friends? There will be others in the Class Pets series, so perhaps he plans flashbacks. (There is a character mentioned that you have never meet as […]
