First, I will be right up front: I grew up in a family of hunters. My mother could outshoot my father when they meet/where first married. I grew up around guns. I was taught to respect them. If I had wanted to, I am sure my father would have taught me to shoot. I have seen animals displayed in ways many people would not approve of or could possible handle. Second, I am a proud meat eater. Have been all my life. And finally, I […]
Why? This Old Thing? Well it’s new to me!
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is my “This old Thing” We know the story: A little girl falls down a rabbit hole and discovers a world of nonsensical and amusing characters. We know the controversial story behind Lewis Carroll and the real Alice. We have probably all have seen at least the Disney movie version. I have seen several live action ones (from Ringo Star as the Mock Turtle, Andrew Lee Potts as Hatter, Phillip Winchester as the Knave and of course, ol’ Johnny Depp) […]
The list: Publishers Weekly The Most Anticipated Children’s and YA Books of Fall 2018 has a bunch and here is one
Louisiana’s Way Home by Kate DiCamillo is my #CBR10bingo on a list book. It is on the Publishers Weekly The Most Anticipated Children’s and YA Books of Fall 2018 While I give this book a five there were a few plot holes for me. (Spoiler) Louisiana never sees it is wrong to steal from the vending machine (or worse to get her friend to do it for her). She might be about 10 years old in the late 1970’s and her Granny might not be […]
HOW in the world is a book about ROADKILL actually so FREAKIN’ (only I didn’t say freakin’) funny?????
This is my chosen for its cover book. At first, I thought it was a dancing dinosaur. I then wondered why the dinosaur was tip-toeing across the road. I then read the title. Oooo-kay. This is going to be. Interesting. Hopefully. I was afraid it was going to be very dull and academic. It is not. The author makes sure you are right there along for the journey. She presents her story just as that, a story. The facts are there, but you might be […]
A lighthearted parody of Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar,
The Very Hungry Pregnant Lady is a spoof of that board book favorite, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The spoof aspect can be a bit much sometimes by having the joke “over played” and done too many times. (Yes, I am looking at you Goodnight Moon spoofs). This time, however, the spoof is hilarious. And it would be the perfect baby shower gift (not so much for the child but for the mother herself). However, there is nothing inappropriate, so a child could […]
It is impossible. But it is not ridiculous.
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a 2010 Newbery Honor Book, meaning it was nominated for the award but lost to When You Reach Me. It fills the Snubbed slot on my bingo card for that reason. And guys, I um… I think it’s a better book then When You Reach Me. I read and reviewed When You Reach Me earlier this year, and while I thought it was fine I didn’t love it. And it might be because this book hits me where […]
