Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse or does he?

September 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Adrian Simcox Does Not Have a Horse by Marcy Campbell has some interesting elements. It is a softer version (text and illustration wise) of Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. Chloe, the narrator of our story knows that Adrian cannot have a horse. Why? Because he cannot have a horse in town. Or in his small house. Or the fact it takes a lot of money to take care of a horse and he has raggedy clothing. It is not until her mother gives her a […]

Explore friendship, crushes, and all-around drama!

September 14, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Dome’Loki recommend Ghost by Raina Telgemeier. But since I had already read that one I am taking Drama as my Cannonballer Says! The line in the review, “While I didn’t connect to this story the way I did Smile and Drama…” got me thinking about Drama. I did connect with Telgemeier in Smile. Though I never had braces as a child (but did just do the Invisalign braces as an adult) much of her adventures of getting through life resonated sharply. And I connected with Sisters as well. It […]

Caught out in the rain in the most dangerous Magic Tree House mission yet!

September 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

By my count, this is number 16 in my bingo journey and The Last in a Series! The Magic Treehouse series is an interesting one. Ever since I have heard about it, I wanted to read one. However, I have only read some of the non-fiction companions to the fiction stories and some of her non-Treehouse books. When the read the last in a series came up on the bingo board, I figured why not? Well, the problem is, there are series within the series! […]

Getting in the Halloween spirit

September 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Mother Ghost: Nursery Rhymes for Little Monsters by Roland Garrigue is my go-to Halloween story this year. It is superbly funny and quirky and has the most fun illustrations to compliment the text. However, the illustrations are not for everyone. They do have a uniqueness that make them not have a “soft” Halloween look. A coworker of mine said that while she is sure they work well for the text, she was not really loving the illustrations. They are not completely realistic and are slightly […]

It’s storming outside, but inside we are snug and reading!

September 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sam Usher knows how to create great illustrations. They tell the story without his text to compliment them. I usually am not a fan of wordless picture books, but Usher would be a great candidate for that genre. With that said his book Storm is a text and illustration treat. The grandfather and grandson are back for another adventure in Storm. This time they want to fly a kite as it is so windy and ready for a good storm. Of course, they have to […]

While I’ll miss them coming to my store, I did not miss their gem of a book!

September 11, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Good Rosie is the latest picture book by author Kate DiCamillo and illustrator Harry Bliss. It is an interesting take on a new situation scenario where the child (or in this case, dog) is lonely and would like to make friends but is nervous about making these new friends. This new situation could because the child/dog is going to a new school, it is their first day of school or they are going to the child/dog park.   While you can see the illustrations are […]
