Pete has no pants and I really wish he did

October 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am very sorry to say, Rowboat Watkins, but I did not like your book Pete With No Pants. There was something that did not speak to me. Perhaps it is the fact that I am just not a nudist at heart. With that said, I appreciate the hard work that went into making Pete With No Pants and hope you sell a lot of copies (of this title and the rest of your books as well). Pete is an elephant with an active […]

Put on your bow tie and pull up a comfy chair and get ready to read

October 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

At first, I was not sure if I would like Giraffe Problems by Jory John. But because I usual do enjoy Lane Smith’s illustrations, I thought it would be something to attempt. The fact I was not sure I was going to like the book is the fact the story has been done before and there was nothing really fresh about it. However, while I am not “jumping up and down” over the story the ending is refreshing and comforting. The giraffe of the story […]

What do you want to do Monster?

October 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Eat Pete by Michael Rex is more of a 3.5 rating. This is because I am on the fence about the ending. I am not sure (spoiler) I like the “hug” aspect that the monster does (instead of wanting to eat Pete) but of course, I know that you cannot have the monster eating Pete (well second spoiler, at least not eating him for good this time). My absolute favorite part of the book are the facial expressions on the monster when the words EAT […]

A look into Castro’s national literacy campaign through the eyes of its child teachers

October 2, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do not remember not reading and an author that sticks out as a reason for that is Katherine Paterson. Her book, The Master Puppeteer was a favorite. Eighteenth century Osaka and the world of puppeteers comes to life on its pages. As an adult, books like Bread and Roses, Too; The Same Stuff as Stars and The Flint Heart made it into my readings. And, while I had seen it before a few days ago, My Brigadista Year finally found its way too. Lora, […]

“Relax, silly chickens! It’s HALLOWEEN!”

October 1, 2018 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

Halloween is the BEST holiday ever. Even better than my birthday and Christmas. And Eek! Halloween is a Sandra Boynton book, so ’nuff said. She is better than Halloween. Okay maybe I would not go that far, but I would go as far to say it might be hard to find a better combination for a Halloween book. Boynton’s funky chickens are at it again. They do not know what to do about the creepy events that are going on: “Witches, wizards, robots, and an […]

The Coolest Ghoul in School

October 1, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ghoul School by Kevin O’Malley is one of those books where I am not “jumping up and down” screaming, “This is the best book EVER!”  But it is one of those books where I will be recommending it to people. Mostly, this would be a great read for your library Halloween story time. Or the classroom read when you are at the end of the day (as it is not a Halloween story), or before the Holiday (because it can be a Halloween story), or […]
