Oh no, they (almost) killed David!

The Discovery by K. A. Applegate

The Threat by K. A. Applegate

The Solution by K. A. Applegate

July 23, 2025 by cosbrarian 3 Comments

The Animorphs created a psychopath then abandoned him on an island of rats. Yes, I just finished Animorphs books 20 thru 22, the David Trilogy. See, the Animorphs meet a new kid named David (who, in my headcast, is tween Mark-Paul Gosselaar). This new kid is playing with a familiar blue cube – the very Andalite cube that gave the Animorphs their morphing powers! They attempt a stealth mission at David’s house to get the cube back, fearful the Yeerks will get their hands on […]

My first encounter with the source material

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

July 21, 2025 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr17bingo Green I never read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a kid. Like many, my acquaintance with the story was from the 1939 film, which I always enjoyed watching even though the flying monkeys and Wicked Witch scared me. Later, in high school or college, I remember hearing that the original story was an allegory about turn-of-the-century American populism and the argument over whether or not the gold standard should be abandoned. You can read a bit about that theory here. Whether or not […]

Mr. Popper’s Penguins, or, what we read in a Japanese emergency room.

Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

July 17, 2025 by Fiat.Luxury 9 Comments

An hour before we landed in Kyoto, my son complained of a fever. Two days later, he was still in bed, nauseated, his fever ranging between 101 and 104. The next day, his fever disappeared…only to reappear with a full-body rash the next day. We were concerned about this rash because we live in the tropics, in a place where mosquito-borne illnesses are common, and we knew the signs of high fever, body aches, and a rash. As soon as I saw it, I thought, […]

When your abandoned lighthouse is not so abandoned after all

The Ghost of Wreckers Cove by Angelica Del Campo, Christian Argiz and Liniers

July 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cbr17bingo G (G is for Ghost) When I find a book from Papercutz I usually have an extreme I really like this or I really don’t. Now, granted The Ghost of Wreckers Cove by Angelica Del Campo, Christian Argiz and Liniers (illustrator) had a few bumps as I am an adult reader who has to remember sometimes you need to suspend your “reality need” for the sake of a good story.  I was debating if I wanted to read this graphic novel as it looked […]

Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus, elves, flying reindeer and lots of love

North for the Winter by Bobby Podesta

July 16, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cbr17bingo N (N is for North and Nobody will believe what our main character does!) North for the Winter by Bobby Podesta is probably one of the best books I’ve read this year. I love the historical aspect (the birth of tracking Santa because of a misprint in an advertisement in 1955) and while maybe it was not the most original with the grief and family connection/friend interaction, the ending was worth that familiarity of grief and the healing process. It is fun and quirky. […]

B is for Bingo and Batcat

Batcat V03 Cooking Contest! by Meggie Ramm.

July 15, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr17bingo B (for Batcat) When you find yourself reading a series, there are only two options. The first, only read one and hope that you can live with any open ending or continuation to the story unanswered, or two, be like me with the series Batcat and try and read them all! Volume 3 of Batcat is Batcat V03 Cooking Contest! by Meggie Ramm. This time there is more fun and cuteness from Batcat (who is a nonbinary, part bat and part cat creature) and […]
