The Human Part of War

PEREMOHA: Victory for Ukraine (Nepemora) by TokyoPop and others

February 9, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Written and illustrated by Ukrainian creators” these idealistic stories within PEREMOHA: Victory for Ukraine (Nepemora) show the strength of the little person and how the horrors of war unfold. The stories follow the civilians and soldiers front and center. There are war images, some language (though some is “bleeped out”) and just the idea of war could be triggers, however, overall, things are well done and not graphic for graphic sake. Most of the action happened in 2022 so it has become a piece of […]

“Perfect timing. Perfect delivery. Jackie was blessed with utter confidence in his own talent.”

Jackie, Oy! by Jackie Mason with Ken Gross

February 6, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

My mom got this for me for Christmas due to my interest in Frank Sinatra (Jackie Mason was nearly killed due to his jokes about Frank Sinatra, and he was beaten up in a separate incident for the same reason). Mason denies the jokes in this book and says there were a lot of comedians with the last name Mason at the time who could have made them, but I had trouble believing that and the tone of that section was strange. It felt like […]

“Eddie, if you’d never done anything but this, I’d be proud all my life.”

Take My Life by Eddie Cantor with Jane Kesner Ardmore

February 6, 2024 by GentleRain Leave a Comment

I really loved this memoir and it made me cry on the train, which is quite an achievement given how much I hate crying in public transit. I had never heard of Eddie Cantor before I picked this up randomly in a used bookstore due to the cover, but his dedication to charity fundraising and his kind nature come through very strongly in this book. He had raised over $280 million for charity at the time he wrote this (1957), which given inflation is just […]

The Visitor by Dodai Stewart

A romantic memoir about the idea of love

The Visitor (The One #5) by Dodai Stewart

February 2, 2024 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

“The Visitor” is a true story from journalist Dodai Stewart. On NYE, I stumbled upon it looking for something quick to hit my book goal. Once I began, I realized I’d rather savor it. I finished the audiobook while walking my pup on New Year’s Day. The story is a poignant musing on the idea of love. She explains how she grew up in New York. She loves how cinematic living in the city can be. Everything seems full of promise and glamor, especially when […]

The Past is a Different Country

Wanderlust: An Eccentric Explorer, an Epic Journey, a Lost Age by Reid Mitenbuler

February 1, 2024 by Pooja 2 Comments

Peter Freuchen first rose to prominence as an Arctic explorer in the early twentieth century, but during his long adventurous life he wore many other hats, becoming a best-selling author, working in Hollywood, and being imprisoned in a Nazi prison camp for being a member of the resistance. I like exploration stories. They introduce you to an old world that no longer exists, they have the kinds of details that boggle the mind, and are usually populated with exactly the eccentric kinds of people you’d […]

Darkest moments and hope

Finding the Light: A Mother's Journey from Trauma to Healing  by Marian Henley

February 1, 2024 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I received an email a few days ago, with eight online reader links to books coming out from March 2024 to May 2024. One of those titles was Finding the Light: A Mother’s Journey from Trauma to Healing by Marian Henley. At first I thought it was another older title, as the covers were similar, but then I noticed it was not due early March 2024. Now, I have said my reading for 2024 is to be fun, well there really is nothing fun about this love letter to […]
