I read this book a while back when I was going through withdrawals after binge watching season two of the show the book is based on. Initially when I found out that the series was based on a book I didn’t want to read it right away so as not to spoil the series, but in this case the need was too strong (and there is enough differentiation to not really spoil much).   In case you are living under a rock, Orange is the […]

Douchepocalypse Now

September 16, 2014 by Alli Leave a Comment

Alright, cards on the table time. My name is Alli and I used to have a crush on Corey Feldman. Sigh, what a relief to finally get that off my chest. My BFF and I used to watch Corey movies back in the olden days, she liked Haim and I liked Feldman. We both got over these crushes like normal people do, but we revisited our glory days back in 2007 when they were filming the 2 Coreys reality show and we heard that Feldman’s […]

Zero Dark Thirty the book!

September 14, 2014 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

I joined the military  after 9/11 but I think would have joined even if the tragedy never occurred.  I always felt the need and desire to serve so I certainly identify, to an extent, with the SEALs in this story.  Since I am in the military, the specter of Usama bin Laden (UBL) always lingered over us and his actions have impacted my life immensely.  I vividly remember the day that he was killed.  Many of my friends celebrated.  Some celebrated by partying, some had […]

A Bourdain Book You’ve Likely Missed

September 10, 2014 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

After reading Kitchen Confidential this summer I decided to add all of Anthony Bourdain’s books to my To Read pile. Given my slightly OCD nature I went immediately to Goodreads to figure out which book was next by publication date, not knowing which came first, A Cook’s Tour  or Medium Raw (it’s A Cook’s Tour for those equally as worried about these things as I am). While looking for that information I came across another book Bourdain authored.  This one wasn’t an autobiographical work and […]

Let’s Explore David Sedaris’s Colonoscopy (no, really).

August 29, 2014 by bonnie 1 Comment

After thoroughly enjoying David Sedaris read his own work, I decided it was time for Part II. I chose Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls on audiobook, since that’s his latest. I am sure I will get around to the others, as well. I’ve had friends who read this work and said they were starting to wear thin on Sedaris’s schtick. I totally get that. My sister believes he’s plumbed his life thoroughly, and I don’t disagree. However, since I’ve only read two books (and on […]

The Joys of Middlemarch

August 29, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Next to Jane Austen, I love no author and works better than those of George Eliot’s. I have often been teased or side-eyed, especially when I lead in with Silas Marner. What can I say? It’s easy to love Silas when he’s played by a Jack Russell terrier in a pint-sized costume: Stay gold, Ponybone. Wishbone introduced me to Silas Marner in eighth grade, and then I read and fell in love with Middlemarch in college. I briefly declared it my favorite novel above Pride […]
