Here’s my review (coming soon) of Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham. Click here.
Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl
Just under the wire! I received Don’t Kill the Birthday Girl as one of a dozen (literally) books for Christmas. In my family I’m the ‘allergy girl’ though reading Beasley’s account of 30 years of severe food allergies has me counting my blessings. This memoir is more informative than anecdotal; but rather than reading like a text book, Birthday Girl takes a dense subject for many and makes it entertaining. In 1992, Sandra’s fourth grade class was visited by a nutritionist regarding the newly developed […]
Color of Water and Deep Waters at That
The penultimate read for my first Cannonball go-around was selected by an astute member of my book club. As race has risen to the forefront of our culture once again, she thought it would be interesting to read and discuss a book about…race. The Color of Water by James McBride is the biography/autobiography of McBride’s mother and himself. I should mention that McBride’s mother is Jewish and McBride’s father is Black. I was interested to see how he would develop the narrative and what point […]
Laura Ingalls Wilder–in her own voice
I grew up reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s novels as a little girl, and I make a sojourn through the Little House series every few years. As a lifelong Midwesterner, The Long Winter is a personal favorite (perhaps because I relate to it, especially this past winter). I remember from pieces of autobiographies that Ingalls had left some details out, including the death of her baby brother, which is never mentioned in the series at all. I was curious to see how Wilder’s actual life stacked […]
Absolutely Stunning
Immediately after reading Wild, I posted on facebook, tagging all the women I know who hike, who camp, who have mothers, who are imperfectly trying to make their way through the world, who have made mistakes, who have thrown themselves into life, and who are absolutely fucking magnificent. This was an incredibly and beautifully powerful book, earning every bit of praise it has been given. I say this knowing full well that there are people out there who vehemently disagree with me.I have read a few reviews […]
More Poehler Please
Amy Poehler, comedienne, best friend of Tina Fey, SNL alumni, genius behind Parks and Recreation, brains behind Smart Girls at the Party, and all around general ass-kicker, wrote a book. And it’s good. In fact it’s great. I’ll avoid comparisons to Bossypants, Is Everybody Hanging Out Without Me?, and the other recent biographies written by the various funny women we’re so lucky to have in our lives, except to say that I’m so so glad to live in a time when women like Poehler, Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling […]
