How do you rehabilitate the devil?

January 6, 2015 by ingres77 7 Comments

First, a disclaimer: I was a newly-minted adult in 2000, and the Bush-Gore foray was the first election I was able to throw myself into. I felt taller with my new-found responsibilities as a member of the voting public, and took the matter seriously. I read up on both of the candidates (and Nader, but let’s be serious), and weighed their positives and negatives. I decided on Bush. Not because I had a particular affinity for him or his principles (I think I’ve always been […]

The Rise and Fall and Rise and Fall and Rise of Butch Walker

January 4, 2015 by TylerDFC 1 Comment

I’ve been a long time fan of song writer, producer, guitarist, and singer Butch Walker and have had this book on my “To Read” list for quite a while. I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint. For those who don’t know him, Butch was the lead singer/songwriter for the 90’s one-hit-wonder band Marvelous 3. You may have heard their great single “Freak of the Week” back in the day or the 2 excellent albums they put out (Hey Album […]

NPH Autobiography

It’s Gonna Be Legen–Wait For It

January 3, 2015 by ModernLove 2 Comments

I’ve gotten a couple books under my belt so far this year, but I wanted to start on a high note. I had really been looking forward to reading NPH’s autobiography and when I got it for Christmas, I dove right in. To put it shortly, it did not disappoint. I loved CYOA books in elementary and middle school. I was the kind of reader who would check out all possible options before picking one, always trying to get the best ending possible out of it. […]

De-mythologizing a President

January 3, 2015 by ingres77 6 Comments

For some reason, Harry Truman falls into the lesser category of presidents in my mind. I’ve never thought of him as bad, per say, but just…unmemorable. He lacked the flash of Reagan or Kennedy, or the divisiveness of Clinton or Obama, or the corruption of Nixon, or the ineptitude of Carter or Bush. He is overshadowed by his predecessor, Franklin Roosevelt, for not being the savior of the nation, and his successor, Dwight Eisenhower, for not being a war celebrity (though, Truman did serve in […]

Louis Kept Changing the Title to “Who We Aren’t” on Copies at that One Book Signing. Which is Interesting.

January 2, 2015 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

Of course there will always be differences between the publicly presented images of a person and who they really are, especially if the person in question is a public figure, celebrity, etc. So while it truly feels like the boys of One Direction want to be genuine about who they are as people, what they want to say, and how they want to grow and progress in their music, there is still something so controlled about how they are managed and how One Direction™ is […]

Don’t Even Try ‘Cause You Can’t Ignore Her

January 1, 2015 by Trampballs 8 Comments

In every cultural movement, you’ll have the people who are the face of the scene and then you’ll have the background players. Bobbie Brown, best known as the girl in the Cherry Pie video, launched a thousand boners in 1990 writhing around beside Warrant in short shorts, windswept and getting soaked with a fire hose. I remember thinking it was so sweet and right that she married Jani Lane: the front man gets the hottest girl and they make beautiful music together forever. Of course, […]
