Marvelous (I am so funny!)

February 27, 2015 by chatelaine9 2 Comments

I had heard of the Mutter Museum and I love watching surgery on the Discovery Channel or whatever, so I thought this book would be right up my alley, but I did not know Thomas Mutter was a fascinating person in his own right. He had “crazy” ideas about treating patients kindly, cleaning instruments (and his hands), post-operative care, and additionally was on the right side of a number of social issues. PLUS surgery* before anesthesia! Cool details about mid-19th century Paris and Philadelphia! And a […]

I waited over 3 months for this book to become available, the wait was TOTALLY worth it

February 26, 2015 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

I feel like I should write a long and in depth review of how and why Amy Poehler’s Yes Please worked so well for me. But, I don’t know that I know how to do that. I’ve seen mostly positive reviews of the book and I agree that it’s my second favorite autobiography by a comedian, coming in right behind Craig Ferguson’s American on Purpose. But I don’t know that I’m able to put my finger on why. One of the detractions I’ve seen, and something […]

NPH + CYOA = Pretty OK

February 25, 2015 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

This is a Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) book written by Neil Patrick Harris (NPH). I repeat, CYOA, NPH, so out of the gate, it’s strong. I got this book for Christmas (thanks mom!) and was pretty excited about it, as I’m a big fan of the legen(dary) man. Like a lot of budding nerds, I was a voracious reader of the CYOA format in my youth, and thought that the conceit was clever. After reading it, I’m glad I did and enjoyed it, but […]

A really entertaining audio book

February 21, 2015 by Malin 4 Comments

Before I bought and listened to this audio book, which came to my attention thanks to fellow Cannonballer Narfna‘s enthusiastic review, this is what I knew about Craig Ferguson: 1. Until very recently, he hosted the Late, Late Show, where he always seemed to be genuinely interested in the guests in the few clips that I’ve seen. 2. He really likes Doctor Who 3. He used to be in a band with Peter Capaldi, who is currently playing Doctor Who. 4. He’s voiced a number […]

A meandering, immature look at college life.

February 19, 2015 by ModernLove Leave a Comment

Disclosure: I received this book for free from NetGalley in return for a honest review. I love reading memoirs and biographies. Famous people, people with interesting life stories, people who have done something. I especially love reading about strong women who have gone out there and done amazing things. This? This was not one of them. This read like a vanity project of a woman who thought she had an interesting life and wanted to share the lessons she’s learned. It was too long, written […]

“I didn’t want an obvious life.”

Manifesto by Anonymous

February 18, 2015 by Halbs 5 Comments

When I was twenty years old, I remember becoming infatuated with anonymously publishing a mission pamphlet or manifesto and leaving it all over my university’s campus. I wanted to rouse the well-meaning but wrong-living people around me to Life. I wanted to tear down everything that made me angry. I wanted the injustices and stupidities that I saw in American life to make everyone angry. I thought that I was meant for more; I thought that everyone was meant for more. Those pamphlets or manifestos […]
