I am sure there are other versions of happiness, but this one is mine.

I saw Lynsey Addario on The Daily Show promoting her book: It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War (2015). Jon Stewart was obviously impressed, and even though Addario is just 41, she seems to have already lived a remarkable life. On the show Addario talked about photography, getting kidnapped in Libya, and the struggle to balance her work with being a wife and mother. Because Addario’s photographs are scattered throughout this book, I’d recommend reading the hardcover book rather than the Kindle […]

Bunnies, whizpoppers and dog costume parties

April 10, 2015 by janniethestrange Leave a Comment

After the trauma of reading Ruby, I needed something life-affirming. I vaguely remember reading Ms. Bergens first memoir, Knock Wood back in the day and enjoying her singular voice. A Fine Romance focuses on her romances with three people in the second half of her life; her first husband, the brilliant French director Louis Malle, her daughter with Louis, Chloe and her current husband, Marshall Rose. I think I would have really enjoyed the audio book read by her because love her rich voice. It […]

The True Story of an American Revolutionary

April 3, 2015 by Valyruh 1 Comment

A fascinating true story of a revolutionary figure in the history of American medicine who has for some reason remained in obscurity – until now. Aptowicz’s well-researched and, even more importantly, well-written biography of Dr. Thomas Dent Mutter has all the excitement of a true thriller. Clearly entranced by her subject. Aptowicz introduces us to a dazzling innovator in the field of medicine, who not only saved countless lives with his introduction into the U.S. of the virtually non-existent field of “radical surgery” (what we […]

Murder and Mayhem in the Silent Film Era

April 1, 2015 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

My dad is a dork. He loves old movies; my sister & I were raise on Jimmy Stewart and Audrey Hepburn, 50s musicals and Some Like it Hot. I could pay my student loans off with how many times I’ve heard “Clara Bow- what a babe!” I read Mann’s How to Be a Movie Star and knew he was well versed in writing about Hollywood- So a true crime story about a murder during the heyday of the silent film era seemed like a fun […]

Let’s Cut to the Chase, Coco Chanel was a Nazi

April 1, 2015 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I think most people know who Coco Chanel is, even if all you know is she was a fashion designer. Jackie Kennedy was wearing Chanel when John was shot and Marilyn Monroe slept in nothing but Chanel No. 5… but did you know Coco Chanel was an antisemite who actually aided in the Nazi efforts during WWII? I remember, vaguely, a TV movie on the subject but it escaped my memory until stumbling upon this biography. Sleeping with the Enemy is a pretty straightforward biography- […]

Everything History Should Not Be

March 30, 2015 by Ale 4 Comments

I’m so angry that THIS was my half-cannon ball….. I’m working on researching “Godey’s Lady’s Book” for an annual historic fashion show I run, and there’s a striking lack of historical documentation about this famous magazine other than manually plowing through 60 years worth of the magazine itself, and frankly, I don’t have that kind of time. So I thought I would do a bit of digging about the founder and his editor, Sarah Hale, to shed some light on the gaping holes I have […]
