A new year, a new Cannonball, and I’m sticking with what works for me. I kicked off CBR7 with amemoir, so I figure why not go the same route? This was also a gift from my awesome book exchange gifter, who correctly noted I love memoirs of strong, amazing women who do incredible things. A+ job on this one, Teresa. Now, I must admit that I knew nothing about Carrie’s life before picking up this book. I’ve never listened to Sleater-Kinney, and I watched Portlanida once, but […]
They hate us ’cause they ain’t us!
This review is for the audio version of this book. As a public service announcement, I recommend that you check in with your local library to see if they support OneClickdigital or other apps that let you download audiobooks to your smartphone via library membership. I have listened to a lot of hot bestsellers this way for free! Free! This book has been reviewed at least a few times on this site already. While Why Not Me? was less expansive than her first book, I […]
Terry loves writing autobiographies!
The title to this book misled me a bit. It sounds like a self-help/relationships/gender studies book, but Manhood is about ninety-five percent Terry Crews memoir, and only about five percent advice about being a good guy. This frustrated me a bit; it felt like a little bit of a bait and switch from the publisher or Crews. Celebrity autobiographies seem more prevalent than I can remember, and they vary widely in quality and readability. While this one was not what I expected, it ultimately did […]
In which I am outraged by a book’s audacity to be poorly written, edited, and titled
This book made me unreasonably angry, so here I am, entering the world of the Cannonball Read as an outraged reader. I really wanted to love this book, because it’s about something about which I know nothing. But I wasn’t able to learn much. The narrative is completely scattered, and there are an astonishing number of tangents that are distracting and irritating. I mean, total non-sequitors. An example, “The story [of a prank pulled by Filippo Brunelleschi], known as “The Tale of the Fat Carpenter,” […]
First Review of the Year
Happy New Year Cannonballers! So my sister read Most Talkative as one of her 260 books last year and lent me her copy because she knew it would appeal to me on my most shallow level. Or maybe because she christened me as most talkative decades ago and wanted me to read about my male counterpart? While badkittyuno glossed over the Bravo portion of Andy’s life, I could put names to faces. I still watch Top Chef, was briefly obsessed with Flipping Out and watched […]
They should really dress Raj in a suit once in a while — he cleans up nice
Raj has always been my favorite character on The Big Bang Theory — at least, back when I used to watch it (I dropped off when Amy Farrah Fowler showed up — cannot stand her!). He always seemed really sweet and kind of adorable, and I was happy to find out that Kunal Nayyar, who plays the character, seems the same way in real life. “If what you want happens, good. If it doesn’t happen, very good.” Nayyar came to America at the age of 18 to […]
