She’s Basically the Best

January 17, 2016 by ASKReviews 4 Comments

The estate of Notorious B.I.G. gave permission to use chapter titles inspired by his lyrics. That’s pretty fantastic. More fantastic? This book. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is an impressive woman who I wish I knew more about when I was younger. She is tougher than I am, that’s for sure, and she’s spent her life quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) breaking down barriers. She writes opinions that recognize the humanity of our fellow citizens, and pens deliberate dissents that point out when the majority […]

“My name is Dwight Schrute. My father’s name? Dwight Schrute. His father’s name? Dwide Schrood”

I don’t know why Rainn Wilson named his memoir The Bassoon King, yes he played the bassoon as a teenager but it wasn’t a pivotal part of his growing up. He talks about Dungeons & Dragons, sci-fi books, and his Baha’i faith shaping his childhood more than being a band geek. I suppose it does set the tone of a not-quite-serious look at the boy who would become Dwight Schrute. Rainn Wilson would not have been given a book deal if he hadn’t played Dwight, […]

The Story of a Life Well Lived

January 15, 2016 by expandingbookshelf 1 Comment

A few months ago, I was on a Radiolab binge at work when one of my favorite guests showed up to be interviewed. Neuroscientist Oliver Sacks, author of scientific classics like The Man Who Mistook his Wife as a Hat was a Radiolab staple. His enthusiasm for science and discovery shined through in his interviews, whether he was talking about his love for the Periodic Table of Elements or the strange neurological cases he’d come across in his career. But from the start, this interview […]

An Original BAMF

January 15, 2016 by ModernLove 1 Comment

So we all know that RBG is one of the most badass ladies to ever rock the black robes (or, honestly, just one of the most badass in general). She has spent decades fighting for gender quality, fearlessly and tirelessly going after what she things is right. She’s played with the big boys and held her own. All this from a tiny little New Yorker with a thing for scrunchies. Who also, I’ve found out, can do more push ups at age 82 than I can at […]

“I lived in a world that at any moment could erupt into fire. It was the sort of knowledge that kept you on your toes.”

Jeannette Walls grew up with three siblings, an alcoholic father who drank every dime he made, and an artistic mother who made it very clear to her children that she blamed them for her lack of success. They often moved in the middle of the night — to flee the FBI, according to her father — and spent years in hard poverty. Throughout it all, Jeannette and her siblings banded together to care for each other, and drag each out of the messes that their […]

“There’s a difference between wanting to be looked at and wanting to be seen.”

I won this book through a giveaway on Goodreads. Prior to reading The Art of Asking; or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Let People Help, I knew exactly two things about Amanda Palmer: she wrote & sang the hysterical song “Coin Operated Boy”, which a friend recommended to me years ago. And two, she’s married to (and recently procreated with), one of my favorite authors: Neil Gaiman. After reading this book, I feel like I know her much, much better — and really respect her […]
