“I am not much different now. I have never wanted to grow up and stop playing.”

February 21, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

After the tediousness of Tesla I needed something fun and enjoyable, My Mother Was Nuts fit the bill nicely. I know Penny Marshall from Nick & Nite reruns of Laverne and Shirley as well as A League of Their Own but it was nice to get to know a little bit more about her. My Mother Was Nuts was funny and honest, Marshall has a lot of crazy stories about her time in Hollywood and she is really open about some of her experiences. She […]

“A dysfunctional family is any family with more than one person in it.”

February 19, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I feel like I’ve read a lot of dysfunctional family memoirs lately, but this was probably one of the best-written memoirs (most dysfunctional families), up there with The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. “Those are only rumors of suffering. Real suffering has a face and a smell. It lasts in the most intense form no matter what you drape over it. And it knows your name.” Mary Karr grew up in the 1960s, mostly in a poisonous east Texas oil town called Leechfield, although she did spend […]

The devil is bathed in blue light, rides a white horse, and is voted into office.

As the sun descended in the west, a restless crowd gathered before a cedar tree. There was a chill in the December air, and it was thick with the tangy smell of sweat, fear and anticipation for what was about to happen. Boxed in by cars, a young 20 year old man named Cordie Cheek stood before a ladder with a rope around his neck. A teeming mass of men, women, and children threw epithets at him, and shared a palpable sense that justice was […]

Growing up in war – a surprisingly delightful read!

February 17, 2016 by tillie 3 Comments

So people have been raving about this book for years and, as per usual, I am so late to the station that the train has already traversed the planet and come all the way back to drop its passengers off. It wasn’t until a friend literally pressed the book into my hand and commanded me to read it that I finally did. This time I should’ve gotten on the train sooner. So why didn’t I? Well people kept raving about the book, but every time […]

Man out of time

February 16, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

My husband loves Nikola Tesla; our dog’s name is Tesla Coil (Tes) and we have a cat named Edison (Eddie). I picked up Tesla, Man out of time to read more about the man my husband admires. With Elon Musk’s Tesla Motor Company bring the Tesla name back in the mainstream there are a lot more people nowadays that know the name and know some of the wrongs committed against Tesla (primarily by Thomas Edison). Tesla was a Serbian electrical engineer who emigrated to the […]

“My mother didn’t try to stab my father until I was six.”

February 16, 2016 by badkittyuno 4 Comments

I know Alan Alda has decades of prestigious acting under his belt, and most people know him primarily as Hawkeye on M.A.SH., but I really only know him for one role: he played Dr. Kerry Weaver’s mentor on ER, and she eventually had to confront him about his Alzheimer’s disease. According to IMDB, that arc was in 1999 — so obviously he made an impression on me with the role. When I saw his biography with it’s rather…eye-catching title, I figured I might find out a bit more […]
