My Last Chance to Feel Human

February 28, 2016 by Ellesfena 1 Comment

I’m not sure how to review this book. For those who don’t know (am I the only one who never had to read this in high school?), the first half is an account of Frankl’s time in concentration camps during World War II, while the second half discusses in more detail the psychotherapy that Frankl developed, logotherapy. And now that I’ve summarized it, I still don’t know how to proceed from here. I don’t think this book can be reviewed in the traditional sense–I certainly don’t want […]

Off With Her Head

February 25, 2016 by Gabby N 1 Comment

Divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived. It’s how you remember what became of the six wives of Henry XIII. That there’s even a way to help you remember the love life of a monarch whose reign is 500 years in the past speaks to the enduring cultural relevancy of Henry and his wives. And if you were to ask someone off the street to name you just one of them, I’d put my money on it that they’d name Anne Boleyn. Witch, feminist before her […]

At least it wasn’t Piers Anthony’s Utopia

If you’ve read the book Going Clear or seen the HBO documentary of the same name, the coercive tactics and cult-like secrecy used by the Church of Scientology will come as no surprise to you. What makes Beyond Belief unique is the inside view of the actual structure of the Sea Org itself. Jenna Miscavige is the niece of David Miscavige, the spiritual and financial head of the church. Her parents left their comfortable life in their custom built dream home to join the […]

No-no-Notorious

February 25, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

“For some reason, people repeatedly have asked RBG when she thought there would be enough women on the court. The question is asinine, her answer effective: ‘Where there are nine.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a champion for equal rights long before she was an Internet sensation. This biography was a lot of fun, it flavors the facts with some of the memes made of Ginsburg in the last few years. It seemed a timely read following the death of fellow Justice, Antonin Scalia, who was […]

Clear alcohol is for rich women on diets

One of my favorite shows of the last several years is Parks & Recreation. I was heartbroken when it ended last year but happy the story was able to be finished and we were able to say goodbye to characters I loved. One of the more unique things about the series was that most of the main cast saw a huge increase in their exposure and popularity. In addition to the most striking example, Chris Pratt, you also have Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, and Nick […]

Jesus could tell one helluva knock-knock joke.

February 23, 2016 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

I borrowed this from a co-worker almost two years ago, and it took me three attempts to get through it. I think that is less a product of this book’s merit, and a more a result of the reading interests I’ve had since it was placed in my hands. I always had something else that interested me, so this kept moving further and further down my list. Zealot is, I think, pretty clearly the most controversial book I’ve read for CBR. Shortly after publication, I […]
