I Really Wanted to Punch Her Parents… A Lot

July 8, 2016 by Andrea Krieter 1 Comment

The Glass Castle Rating: 3/5 Summary: This is the memoir of Jeannette Walls and her dysfunctional family. She has a very unorthodox childhood, which some may call negligence or even abuse on her parent’s part. It’s the story of how one can lose faith in people after so many defeats. But it’s also the story of how perseverance and determination can get you out of a tough situation. So many things happened in this book, it’s tough to nail down exactly what to say. It’s […]

To your union, and the hope that you provide

July 7, 2016 by baxlala 2 Comments

Remember on Sex and the City (yeah, that’s right) when Carrie and Miranda try on wedding dresses, just for shits and giggles, and Carrie has a panic attack? That’s exactly how I felt about trying on wedding dresses, not because I didn’t want to marry my fiance (like Carrie) but because I already hate shopping AND trying on clothes. The thought of trying on wedding dresses in front of other people made my skin crawl. I just wanted something comfortable, something non-strapless, and a dress […]

I’ve been in Paris meeting lots of different ladies

July 5, 2016 by baxlala 4 Comments

I’ve read Lucy Knisley’s books mostly out of order. I started with her more recent and worked my way around. Not on purpose, but sometimes that’s just how reading goes, you know? I first discovered Knisley’s work via her webcomic and loved it because she loved, and drew about, so many of the things I loved: cats, books, Harry Potter, food. She was also navigating some of the same things I was, namely How to Adult and everything that went with it. I was also […]

Paging Neil Gaiman fans!

July 5, 2016 by bonnie 1 Comment

A View from the Cheap Seats is a career-long compilation of assorted writing, from invited speeches, to introductions to books and albums, to op-eds on history, culture, politics, comics, life, and death. I had no idea Gaiman’s interests ranged so far and wide—but of course they do. His thoughts are witty, intelligent, and well-crafted. I mean, anyone who’s read his work would know that of course, they are. His lives in England and the United States provide an interesting point and counterpoint to anyone who […]

“After all, in this life we do not know what lies before us.”

July 4, 2016 by Caitlin_D 2 Comments

I picked this one up after reading a mediocre review here on CBR, so I don’t know why I was surprised that it took me two weeks to slough my way to the finish line. First of all, the title is misleading because the daughters’ stories receive no more attention than their parent’s courtship, Alexandra’s medical drama, Alexey’s hemophilia and the dependence Alexandra began to have for Rasputin. The daughters, their personalities, romantic interests and other facts about them are presented, it just doesn’t feel […]

The truth behind the Sexy Tudors

July 3, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Tudor history has pretty much always been my favourite era of any historical period ever. There’s just so much drama and intrigue and the personalities were so immense, be it Henry VIII or his two daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I. Back in November, there was a big audiobook sale over at Audible, and I picked up a huge amount of books, this one included. It took me nearly three and a half months of on and off listening to get through this nearly 23 […]
