Forrest Gump for the Downton Abbey Set

September 8, 2016 by AkBeagle Leave a Comment

Lady Pamela Hicks was in the room where it happened. Frequently. The daughter of the last Viceroy of India, Hicks was born in Madrid.  She was very nearly homeless during World War 1 because her mother forgot which  hotel she had sent her daughters to. She was evacuated from the family manor in London lived with the Vanderbilts in New York during World War 2 while her father commanded the British naval fleet.  She goofed around with cousin, Phillip, on the trip where he met and fell in […]

So YouTube isn’t just Cat Videos?

September 7, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I heard about Lindsey Sterling from my husband who is a fan of her music. He listens classical Pandora radio when he isn’t listening to rock music so loud it bursts my ear drums. While I was listening Lindsey’s memoir I asked him if he knew she got big on YouTube because she dances and he said he’d never seen any of her videos but it explains why she is our violin playing, ballet dancer four year old niece’s “favorite violinist.” So that was enough […]

Mommy Dearest

September 5, 2016 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

If you like Augusten Burroughs, his memoir Running With Scissors in particular, then you will be equal parts mesmerized and horrified by Ariel Leve’s memoir An Abbreviated Life. Leve’s mother was also an unstable poet and while her father was in her life he was literally across the world from her in a time before Skype or even email. Leve’s mother, the poet Sandra Hochman, was unstable on her best days and abusive on her worst. Her mother craved her daughter’s love and affection, something a young […]

Other people read these books too, right? …right?

September 4, 2016 by Blingle Bells 1 Comment

I’m starting to feel slightly weird and sheepish about the number of medical memoirs I’ve read both lately and in general. I realized I might have a problem when I finished this one and instead of thinking “Whew, time for a breather on this type of book,” I thought, “Oh, no. I hope I haven’t read them all…maybe ranking this one will generate some new Goodreads suggestions.” The fact is, I just gulp these books down and have from childhood. I come from a family […]

A mixed bag book club read for me

September 3, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

My Book Club has decided to merge August and September’s books together, which is a good thing overall, since August was *crazy* for us all. Plus, B and D, the members who had the respective picks, decided to go with similarly themed books. B chose Coates’s Between the World and Me (which I read last year and found really profound and insightful), and D chose Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy. I had a strong reaction to it, which he was not expecting. The Chancellor’s review is […]

Caitlin_D, you’ll like this one

September 1, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Ah, funny books by funny ladies — they almost never fail me. “This was when I learned one of the biggest secrets of being a woman, which is that much of the time, we don’t feel like we’re women at all.” Jessi Klein is a writer for Inside Amy Schumer, which I watched pretty religiously the first season only to abandon in season two (sorry, Amy, we cancelled our cable). Klein starts this very well-written memoir by talking about how girls can be tomboys when they’re little, only […]
