“People always say I’m going to look back on these days and laugh — why put it off?”

November 9, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

“Um, am I the only person who is walking around without underwear on today? I know I can’t be. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me, and I know if it’s happened to me more than once, it’s happened to someone else at least one time. I’m three quarters short of clean draws.” Angela Nissel’s memoir The Broke Diaries apparently started out as a blog that she wrote in college, trying to find humor in a very crappy financial situation. Flat-broke in college, occasionally […]

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.”

November 9, 2016 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

I picked this one up after reading Matthew Inman’s very different book about running, in which he mentions Murakami’s memoir. I really enjoyed it, and I think even non-runners would, too. “People sometimes sneer at those who run every day, claiming they’ll go to any length to live longer. But don’t think that’s the reason most people run. Most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest.” Murakami runs long distances — like, he […]

It Sucks She Has To Explain This, But She Does It So Well

November 4, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

I was lucky enough to learn about Phoebe Robinson when a friend recommended I listen to 2 Dope Queens, the comedy podcast she hosts with Jessica Williams (of The Daily Show fame). She is a stand-up comedian and writer, and You Can’t Touch My Hair is her first book. It’s a collection of essays that take on topics as varied as black hair, guilty pleasures, and advice for her niece. I write in my books, and I found myself underlining a lot in this one. I […]

Sure the dogs are fine but the LAMBS

November 2, 2016 by Caitlin_D 3 Comments

Should we go back to Alaska?” I asked Rebekah each spring, on the phone. We’d sit in silence, pondering our excuses, before deciding that this was not the year. Maybe next year. Maybe the year after that. But soon Rebekah was married,  pregnant, settled in a way I could only marvel at from a distance. She said, “I would never let my daughter do what we did.” Blair Braverman and her parents lived in Norway when Blair was a ten year old girl; she spent her […]

I remember Ta-Nehisi Coates from the NPR show Tell Me More

November 1, 2016 by kfishgirl 3 Comments

I lived in the Philly suburbs a few years ago, so WHYY was my source for NPR radio shows. When I first moved down there, and for 3 full years, I worked second shift. I got to hear radio shows that played in the middle of the day. Tell Me More was one of my favorites. I don’t know what it says about me (I’m oblivious?) that for years I never realized that it was about/by African Americans. I guess it was the power of […]

“I developed a constitution that could only ever be described as able and hardy.”

November 1, 2016 by badkittyuno 3 Comments

My husband & I finally started Orange is the New Black a few weeks ago (this is how I read so many freaking books, people — I’m five years behind on must see TV). Kate Mulgrew’s portrayal of Red quickly became one of my favorite performances. She’s tough, she’s smart, and she’s a person. I’m constantly impressed with her. I was so happy to see Mulgrew’s autobiography well-reviewed on this site. While it doesn’t touch on her time as Red (it ends with her role as Capt. […]
