If you suddenly began rising steadily at one foot per second, how exactly would you die?

April 9, 2015 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

Embarking on a 13 hour car trip I asked a friend for a suggestion for an audiobook.  The words “xkcd” and “Wil Wheaton” were barely out of his mouth when I started to download it from my local libraries collection. And I was not disappointed. xkcd is “A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language” so clearly probably a hit with this audience.  There is a “What If” section where readers can ask questions and, as the title suggests, Randall Munroe will possibly choose one to […]

Continue the quest by taking the test.

This one almost feels like a cheat, since I knew going in I was likely going to rate this 5 stars. I enjoyed the book tremendously when I read it the first time nearly three years ago for Cannonball Read 4. This year I have tackled my dislike/fear of the audiobook experience, and decided on a whim that I really did want to hear the Wil Wheaton version of Parzival’s story. It was simply a delight. In case you aren’t familiar, here’s Goodreads to give […]

Books Set in Australia are Best on Audiobook

March 17, 2015 by AmySaysREAD Leave a Comment

I recently listened to the audiobook of Liane Moriarty’s Big Little Lies, and it was wonderful. First, I love Australian accents, and I could happily listen to the narrator all day. Second, the book is just so dang well written . The relationships between all the characters is just wonderfully depicted, and I love how distinct the narrators’ three voices are. After finishing this, I had to immediately go out and get more of Moriarty’s books.

“Scandal and tea at four-thirty.”

Good times with Miss Marple. I wish there would have been a bit more scenes with her, though. Maybe it’s just my own expectations of the role titular detectives should play in their own series, though. There is no written rule saying that the detectives must play the largest role in their books over other characters, it’s just what we’re used to. The vicar was a good pair of eyes to see this story through, after all. I admit it would be fun to see […]

“Scottish by birth, American on purpose.”

February 18, 2015 by narfna 20 Comments

This is the best celebrity memoir I’ve ever read. Now, I’m probably biased because I went into this already loving Craig Ferguson from watching him on The Late Late Show, but he did in his book everything that a book like this should do. He was funny, sincere, and his honesty is that of the ‘warts and all’ persuasion. In fact, showing those warts is the whole point of the book, which he opens by stating, concerning his son, “He will know from an early […]

I think people remember this book for the wrong reasons.

Here’s what I knew about Carrie before I picked up this book: 1. Sissy Spacek played Carrie in the movie from the 1970s. 2. There was a scene in a shower with Carrie’s period and tampon throwing. 3. She is a loser who gets invited to the prom by the most popular boy in her class as a cruel joke instigated by her classmates. 4. At the prom, they elect her prom queen and then dump a bucket of pig’s blood on her. She snaps and her telekinetic […]
