There’s more in the London underground than you might expect

June 21, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

3.5 stars An American art student is found murdered in Baker Street tube station, stabbed to death with a pottery shard. DC Peter Grant, apprentice wizard, senses magical vestigia on the shard, proving that there was something supernatural involved. None of the chief investigators on the case are happy to hear this. The exchange student’s father turns out to be a US Senator, so the Americans send an FBI agent to assist in the case, complicating matters further, as it’s unlikely that she’ll take kindly […]

Two novellas and a short story.

I really, really like Diana Gabaldon’s Lord John Grey novels, but this collection of shorter stories fell a little bit flat for me. I think what I like most about these books is the character work she does alongside the various mysteries, and there really just wasn’t room for any of that in this short of a format. I think there’s a reason she normally gravitates toward longer books as a writer. (Sidenote: I’m currently reading the second LJG novel and I think it’s hilarious that it’s considered […]

Let yourself be triggered.

Well, it’s a first for me to give anything Neil Gaiman has written less than four stars, but I’m reminding myself that according to Goodreads’ rating system, that means “I liked it.” And I did! Some of the stories were delightful and magical, and terrifying. But some of them didn’t really work for me, for one reason or another, and overall, it was actually harder to pay attention to the stories, or work up enough energy to dive back into the book, knowing I’d have […]

This book almost turned me into a rabid frothmonster.

I’m not usually one for books about mommies and gossip and the plight of the suburban housewife, but I am highly susceptible to books everyone seems to love. So I gave in (like I always do). Actually, let’s not even play around and call it “giving in.” I’m a curious bastard. If you get me curious, I’m gonna follow through. And I’m so glad I was curious about this book, because I really ended up loving it. Here is where I would normally give you […]

This series has lost the fun.

I alllllmost two-starred this fucker. For about the first 2/3 of it, I was actively bored. Halfway through, I actually returned it to the library and didn’t expect to pick it back up for a while. Somebody else had a hold on it, so I couldn’t renew it. But it turns out whoever had that hold either didn’t care enough to actually pick the book up, or returned it almost immediately because they didn’t like it. I can sympathize with that. And it got the […]

Nope.

I’ve read two other Christopher Moore books, Lamb and The Stupidest Angel, and enjoyed them both. I am having feelings of disappointment about A Dirty Job. It had lovely moments, and if it didn’t have those lovely moments, I would hate this book. There are a few spoilers ahead. As the book opens, Charlie Asher is becoming a new father, a widow, and weird stuff starts to happen. Charlie has become a death merchant – a collector of soul vessels. Not all people have a […]
