Don’t expect a happy ending to this one

March 12, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! I found it impossible to review this book without revealing plot details that would probably be considered spoilery, so if you like to start a book without knowing much, probably skip this review. Also, this book is a PREQUEL, best read after you finish the full thirteen book series by Kim Harrison. As of me writing this, the first book is on sale for $2.99. In a world where humans are the dominant species, they are fully unaware that there are a number […]

Always re-read your books, people. You never know what you’ll find if you go digging back in there.

I first read American Gods when I was twenty-five. It was only my second Neil Gaiman book; I’d read Stardust several months earlier and completely fell in love with it, so it seemed like a no-brainer to give this one a go, since so many people were over the moon about it. What I found was not what I expected. The book is long and meandering. Its characters inhabit the grey areas of the world. They do gross things, immoral things, right alongside utterly mundane and profound things. They […]

Thanks to the CBR romance readers hive mind for this one.

March 8, 2017 by narfna 13 Comments

This is another one of those books I probably wouldn’t have touched were it not for the online book reviewing community. Specifically, all of you fellow romance-reading reviewers here at CBR, who read and reviewed Kulti to pieces starting late last year. I’d never even heard of Mariana Zapata until y’all started raving over this book. I’ve learned to trust our collective hive mind over the years, so I picked this up with one of my Audible credits earlier this year, and decided to save […]

A historical romance with hieroglyphs, adventure and a mongoose named Marigold

March 5, 2017 by Malin 7 Comments

Rupert Carsington is the fourth son of the Earl of Hargate and has been sent to Egypt to get out of the way of all the calamities he’s been able to get tangled in at home in England and on the continent. He finds himself locked up in a dungeon jail after seeing a bunch of soldiers beat up a beggar in the street and deciding to defend the man, beating up a horde of soldiers as a result. His bail is paid by Mrs […]

This is the Zodiac Speaking.

March 5, 2017 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book. I’ve been fascinated by the Zodiac case for years, ever since I first saw David Fincher’s movie based on this book, but I think I always felt like the book was too dated to bother with since it was written in 1985. Well, I was wrong. This book is completely engrossing. I think most people probably know the basic outline of the Zodiac murders–a serial killer murdered several people in San Francisco in […]

Neil Gaiman narrates the myths of my people

February 22, 2017 by Malin 5 Comments

4.5 stars When it was announced that Neil Gaiman was doing a book of Norse myths, I was, not to put to fine a point on it, giddy with excitement. I’ve always been a mythology fangirl. I love the Greek and Roman myths, the Egyptians, but as I am Scandinavian, the Norse myths are obviously among the ones I grew up reading, even as a young child. I had several books of the Danish comic book Valhalla, so I knew several of the stories before […]
