A fun thing to do with this series is to predict the way the story will go based on the piece of mythology, history or religion featured in each title. Another fun thing to do is realize how wrong you were in your predictions, after the book has had its way with you. It’s still fun afterwards, though. I bet the authors have a grand ole time coming up with these titles. Some spoilies below, so if you want to go in blind, maybe don’t […]
Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Cat
Fuzzy Nation, by John Scalzi, is a remake of an earlier sci-fi novel by H. Beam Piper. It tells the story of Jack Holloway, a surveyor on the planet Zara XXIII, owned by Zaracorp. He is your classic case of a guy falling upwards. He worked as an attorney and got himself fired by punching a client. He got himself a large settlement from the company that wanted him to get the case to a mistrial. He is smart, but he clearly knows it. He’s also […]
Liked, not loved.
Okay, so, luckily I read some mediocre reviews of this before starting it and I adjusted my expectations accordingly. I was way too pumped for this book, and frankly, my expectations for it were unrealistically high. Books that you ALL CAPS LOVE don’t come along that often, and the chances that an author will deliver a second one, particularly after the first was a debut novel, aren’t super high. I ALL CAPS LOVED The Martian, but I just had a pretty good time with this book. […]
Moonstruck
This review constitutes many firsts for me. Having fundamentally misunderstood CB9 and not posted a single review, this is my first time cannonball-ing in earnest. This was also my first ever audiobook, and it just so happened that we finished it on the 1st of the New Year. My intrepid fiancé and I were looking for a way to pass 12 hours in a car and I was asked to find an audiobook that was “Adventurous, but also Sci-fi and maybe mysterious.” No short order […]
NOT one of the Top 10 romances of the year. Not even Christina Lauren’s best romance this year.
Holland Bakker is trying to be a writer, but two years after graduating from college, still doesn’t really feel like she has anything to write about. The apartment she lives in is in part paid for by her wealthy uncles, and even her job, as a stagehand/photographer at the Broadway theatre where her uncle is the musical director is thanks to him. She’s feeling adrift and like a bit of a scrounger, and desperately wishes she could find some purpose. For more than six months, […]
A cozy but emotionally hefty mystery.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec is not your typical literary detective. He’s functional. He’s kind. He loves and respects his wife, with whom he has a long and trusting relationship. He is still surprised by the violent crimes it’s his job to investigate. He has no tragic backstory or substance abuse issues. He isn’t a genius. And yet he is still good at his job! (I say all this tongue in cheek; I love all those tropes when they are deployed […]
