Comfort re-reading while I keep my tiny human alive

February 22, 2018 by Malin 3 Comments

This is my fourth re-read of The Hating Game, and my original review for the book can be found here. Also this book will contain mild spoilers for the story, so if you haven’t read it, drop everything and come back once you have (it’s awesome, I promise), you may want to avoid this until then. It’s difficult for me to pinpoint exactly what I find so comforting about this book, but it really does work for me on every level. This was my favourite book of […]

Gone: A Girl, A Violin, A Life Unstrung by Min Kym

This love story does not have a happy ending

February 19, 2018 by J Leave a Comment

They’re like great trees, these violins. Like those from which they’re made. They live through epochs. Min Kym fell in love for the first time as a young child with a violin. Parental expedience demanded that she play either trumpet or violin as those were the only instructors available in the same time slot as Kym’s older sister’s piano lesson. She was immediately taken with the instrument. In the week between settling on the violin and receiving her first, she cut out a paper violin […]

“There’s a scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life.”

February 10, 2018 by narfna 2 Comments

The first novel down in my quest to read The Complete Sherlock Holmes by the end of 2018. Though I have seen numerous adaptations of Sherlock Holmes stories over the years, I only managed to read a handful of the actual source material as a child (and The Hound of the Baskervilles is the only one I remember with any clarity). I never managed to read this one, which gives us the introduction between Mr. Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective, and Dr. John Watson, his friend […]

Liked it, wanted more.

I am 100% here for the messages in this book, but I do not think I am the type of person this book is aimed at. My book club read this for January, and I’m really glad we did! Honestly, I have it on audio, and I will probably re-listen to it every once in a while for a pick-me-up, but I know every time I do, my feelings about how awesome the things she’s saying are will clash with my feelings about the style this book […]

I’d love to be a Fairy’s Child

January 28, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

When Jude was seven years old, her life and those of her sisters, were irrevocably changed. Lord Madoc, the Faerie King’s general, showed up on their doorstep, intent on claiming back his long-lost heir and Jude and Taryn’s parents were murdered as a result. Madoc took them and his daughter Vivienne to Elfhame, where they were all raised as part of his household. Most humans in Elfhame are servants (or even slaves) be-glamoured not to realise that they’re trapped in a magical realm. That Madoc […]

“He’s Mine, He’s Everyone’s”

January 21, 2018 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Last year there were several glowing reviews of Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime. Based on positive word of mouth I had already picked up the audio version which Noah narrates himself. I was intrigued by Noah – we’re the same age (well, I’m almost exactly a year older) but our lives couldn’t be more different, and I love a good memoir. For the many reasons life throws your way I did not manage to listen to Born a Crime in 2017. However, fast forward to […]
