Harry’s long dark night of the soul.

May 30, 2018 by narfna 8 Comments

See, this is why we need half stars. This book right here. This is not a five star book for me, but I liked it better than four stars, also, and feel weird rating it the same as other books I’ve rated four stars and enjoyed less. It is a perfect encapsulation of the 4.5 star book. So round up or down? Up or down? It is a terrible decision. Don’t read on if you haven’t read through book twelve. Spoilers ahoy. A little bit […]

Louder Than Life? No Kidding!

One of the unexpected joys I’ve discovered since I’ve started listening to audiobooks is the self-narrated biography or memoir. There is just something about hearing the voice of the subject that really enhances the experience.  This is especially so for biographies written by entertainers and performers, who naturally make excellent narrators. So far, I have enjoyed biographies read and written by Alexei Sayle, Eddie Izzard, Magda Szubanski and David Attenborough. But there is only one so far that I would say HAS to be […]

Does Cookie Dough Ice Cream Go With Red or White Wine?

I don’t really like listening to romance audiobooks, but The Wedding Date was so charming I listened to this for hours. Alexa and Drew have a meet cute – trapped together in an elevator where they share Alexa’s cheese and crackers and Drew tells her about the wedding from Hell he is attending alone that weekend. They laugh and flirt. He invites her to be his date. She agrees. It’s a one weekend thing. She lives in the Bay Area. He lives in LA. They both […]

Long Process, Fast DNA

When I was contemplating subscribing to Scribd’s audio book library, the book that sold me was Michelle McNamara’s I’ll Be Gone In The Dark. I expected to enjoy listening to the book, narrated by Gabri Zachman, I did not expect the book to make me miss my mother and cry. She was both proud of the fact that she had raised a strong-minded daughter and resentful of my sharp opinions.“ That dichotomy was my relationship with my mother and I did not expect to hear […]

For Everyone Who Knows There Was Enough Room For Leonardo DiCaprio on That Door

May 15, 2018 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Narfna recommended this to me as an audiobook some time ago. I have finally picked it up, and it is a goddamn delight. Seriously. It is a rambunctious blend of alternate history, YA, and romance. It starts with an apology to England for what the authors were about to do to history. It’s important that you don’t know too much about how the history is alternate going in. I started laughing pretty quickly, and surprise was part of the delight. If you know anything about […]

404: Girl Not Found

Never give up your voice for a man, you fucking guppy!” I don’t know how I missed melanir’s review of The Refrigerator Monologues last year. It ticks a lot of my boxes comic books feminism sarcasm I read melanir’s review before writing my own and there were many nods of agreement. The Refrigerator Monologues is a series of short stories told in the first person by the dead and sidelined women from comic books. The stories are loosely tied together by Paige Embry, the first […]
