A 2,100 year old Druid and his talking dog Oberon do some magic and stuff.

This was a re-read for me, and I still liked it! I probably would have been okay just going into book two without a re-read and forcing my brain to delve buried memories from chasms deep or whatever, but this was a fast read and I think it was worth it. Lots of little details I know I wouldn’t have remembered, like people’s names, and entire plots . . . I mean, it’s been over four and a half years since I read it the […]

I too did not like this. #CBRBingo #Blackout!?

December 1, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

Well I tell you what, this book. It was just unpleasant. I would not have picked this up if it weren’t for bingo, and none of the other choices looked at all appealing. I thought, well if you pick that one at least you won’t  be bored! And that was true. But my version of not being bored mostly consisted of me yelling at my audiobook about how much I disliked almost everything that was going on. Maybe she is a different author now but […]

Just as good as the first, maybe better?

I was not disappointed by this sequel. P.S. writing this on my phone. I don’t actually have much to say about the book. I enjoyed it a lot, and I was worried that I would have forgotten everything that happened in the last book, and I sort of had, but Scalzi makes it easy for you to catch up. Cardenia is still emperox, Kiva is still a profane little firecracker, Marse is traveling around giving lectures about the flow collapse, and the effing Nohamapetans are […]

“You are the one fixed point in a changing age.”

This is the shortest Holmes story collection: only eight stories and a preface written by Watson, explaining that Holmes is now retired to Sussex and keeping bees, and here are some stories he hasn’t yet published about their adventures, including their very last one. (All the stories in the last published book, The Case-book of Sherlock Holmes, apparently take place before “His Last Bow” as well.) Because of the shortness, you feel it a little bit more when a story is a dud. In particular, […]

“It’s no good choosing your first husband from a school for evil geniuses. Much too difficult to kill.”

This book! This is why Goodreads need to give us half stars. This is not a three star book! Three stars, for me, is like, okay I guess I liked it, grudgingly. Or maybe I liked it but there something fundamentally wrong with it. Or maybe it’s really well written but it’s just not my thing. And four stars is: I liked it a lot and it was great! Nothing to complain about, but not my favorite, would read again. And this book fits into […]

Eleanor and Park Redux #CBRBingo

November 29, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

So I have to write eleven reviews in less than two days if I’m going to make the CBR Bingo deadline, so this and the next ten reviews will probably be short. This was my second time through Eleanor & Park, and I picked it up because I had already read all the books in the So Popular! bingo category, and had recently re-read Attachments, so this book, why not! It’s still great, first of all, but also, it’s still my least favorite Rainbow Rowell […]
