Freaks, Geeks, and Automobiles

Role Models by John Waters

January 15, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 3 Comments

Oooh mama, this is not for the faint of heart! If you aren’t already a fan of John Waters and his coterie of misfits and outsiders then this is NOT the place to start! I first became aware of John Waters through the 1990 film Cry-Baby. It used to be on TV fairly frequently in the late 90s/early Aughts, and I would secretly watch bits and pieces of it when my parents weren’t in the room. I had the “flashback” button on the remote primed and […]

I really need half stars on this one.

Sadie by Courtney Summers

Firstly, I’m nearly certain that I would have given this four stars unreservedly had I not done the audio version. YMMV, obviously, on all books. But here, the audio really pulled me out of the story. I’ll explain. So this book is about bad things that happen to girls, and it’s split into two parts that alternate every other chapter. The first is a fake podcast with a host who is trying to track down the missing 19 year old, Sadie Hunter, after a family […]

“A whale’s graveyard on the whole is not a good place to stomp around on”

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

January 10, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos 2 Comments

I know, I know. Where have I been and how did I not get around to this earlier! To answer that easy question: I have been here, on earth, and I did read this approximately one million years ago. My memory of this volume was corrupted greatly by the 2005 movie adaptation (another issue, I know), and I figured that a new decade was as good a time as any to try out this classic again. Also, I wanted to listen to more audio books […]

Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results by Josh Gondelman

January 2, 2020 by NoNeinNyet 5 Comments

Josh Gondelman has been one of my favorite comedians for a while now. I often fall asleep to comedy albums and specials. His second album, Physical Whisper, is frequently in the bedtime rotation and his more recent album, Dancing on a Weeknight, also makes its way in from time to time. He is one of my favorite Twitter people (@joshgondelman). I was so excited when my library hold on his memoir, Nice Try: Stories of Best Intentions and Mixed Results, finally became available. Gondelman begins […]

She didn’t end the book talking about butt stuff, and that’s important.

You Can't Touch My Hair by Phoebe Robinson

January 2, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I decided randomly a couple of months ago that I was only going to read books by or about badass ladies in January 2020 (the only time I could possibly hold to a theme month is the beginning of the year; it gets too messy later on). It feels auspicious to start out the year this way, and this book was a great start to that. Comedian and podcaster Phoebe Robinson is smart and funny and she has great things to say. This book is […]

3.5 stars Official book description: Tess Bailey: the galaxy’s Most Wanted. Captain Tess Bailey is in deep trouble. She and her crew are on the run, pursued by a tyrant who’ll take them dead or alive. Tess’s best hope is a tall, dark, and much-too-appealing stranger, Shade Ganavan, who says he can help her.
