“I’m dealing with a lot of scary things. I think you have to react to them. And you either laugh at them or you go insane.”

Death Masks (The Dresden Files #5) by Jim Butcher

April 12, 2021 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

I feel like I’ve probably mentioned this in all of my previous reviews of this series but I’m going to mention it again right out of the gate: this book is read by James Marsters, i.e., Spike from Buffy, and he IS Harry Dresden, a delicious and perfect choice for the browbeaten, sarcastic, hapless, chauvinistic wizard. And that is what Harry is. I’ve scanned some reviews that are like, “ugh, when will Harry learn” and “he’s such a chauvinist” and well yes. But that’s the […]

Disappointed and Deceived

D: A Tale of Two Worlds by Michael Faber

April 11, 2021 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

My main problem with this book isn’t the content.  I’m not sure what the author intended, but my issue with his work may have nothing to do with him at all, really.  It’s the categorization.  This is being advertised as an adult fiction.  It is not.  At least with the audiobook, this is firmly in the juvenile range for me.   The premise of the story is interesting, if a bit juvenile.  Our protagonist, Dhikilo, wakes up one morning and the letter “D” is gone.  […]

The main character is a dumbass

Hush by Dylan Farrow

April 11, 2021 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

This is a world where books are banned, because they are believed to have caused a plague.  Well, not necessarily the books themselves, but the ink on their pages.  The Indigo Death, and it spread throughout the land of Montane.  It took Shae’s younger brother, and her mother never really recovered.  In the village where she lives, certain words are never spoken in fear of the plague returning.  (Unless I just don’t remember, they never actually called it “the Hush.”  I think they only called […]

I can see why she won the Pulitzer for this, but it wasn’t completely to my tastes.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson

I’m really glad I did the audio version for this one, because I’m not sure my raccoon brain (shiny things only!) would have had the patience to sit through it otherwise, and it’s worth sitting through. Robin Miles is, as always, a great narrator. This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting, either. I had actually never learned about the Great Migration in all my many (many) years of school, which is not really surprising, but is disheartening, so I was excited to get into […]

Unfortunately this one falls short for me

Sakina's Restaurant by Aasif Mandvi

March 21, 2021 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

In trying to get out of my reading slump I went back to my old Audible library to see what was hanging out there that I hadn’t listened to yet. One of the books there was Sakina’s Restaurant by Aasif Mandvi. I thought I was getting a straightforward short story not a recording of a one man show, and that effected my experience, I think. There’s a way you tell a story when you are going to be in front of an audience versus when […]

Summer Knight by Jim Butcher

March 20, 2021 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

Here I am again, another Dresden file closed! And I’m still along for the ride. The gang is all here: the entire wizard White Council, a blast from the past Dresden thought was gone, kooky fairy godmother Leanansidhe, more oodles of fairies, wolfy friends, and head of SI Karrin Murphy. Speaking of, I had NO IDEA he was spelling her first name like that until I started looking up quotes for my post title: the perils of audiobook. That led me to read another review […]
